He has been having steroids like this for approx 5 years prior to that we got away with having them 3-4 times a year.
We had the same concerns about use of steroids but unfortunately for Barney we couldnt control it any other way - we decided that his quality of life was far more important as it was awful to see him scratching himself red raw.
I would try whatever you can first - if you get a referral to a skin specialist they can create a specific vaccine for the dog based on its allergies. Its given monthly - they eventually become immune to it so it has to be reformulated but it can be very effective.
