I was checking my dogs paws today and noticed that one of the dogs has a worn down dew claw and is very anxious in me touching it. I think all the running about they do together is to blame. Do the dew claws take long to grow back. She is walking on the paw fine.
Should I be concerned.
The dewclaw will grow about the same pace as her other nails, but the advantage being it won't scrape on the ground and get worn down.
I can't imagine she has worn it down, she is probably broken it or snapped it off which is why it is painful. I have to say dewclaws are horrible things that cause the dog no end of grief when they start playing up.
There isn't anything you can do but wait and see if it grows back. If the quick has been snapped too it may not, but the tenderness should ease in a few days.
Best!

" Dexter snapped his when he fell down a rabbit hole and he was in loads of pain so had it removed under GA. "
Poor thing, I loathe the blooming things, as I work my dogs they were always getting torn so for a few years removed them at birth and it was SOOO much better, but then fashions change in buyers eyes, and you put yourself at risk doing this when not a vet if someone objects, and so stopped just last litter....

Sounds as though it may have snapped, Rosie has done this before, it was obviously quite tender for a couple of days, so had to be careful when drying her paws etc, but it soon stopped bothering her. Just keep an eye on it - I imagine it's like breaking a nail too near the skin, hurts like hell but it will grow back.
My poor old springer caught his on something many years ago and it ripped quite badly up his leg. That also had to be removed under GA. On the basis that he suffered quite a lot, I asked the vet to remove the other one at the same time.
Yes, I suppose that was unnecessary, but I didn't want him to possibly go through it all again.
