Labradors moult for England, so my betting is that it's normal. Is there any bald patches? If so, where?

Regards, John

Patches on the sides usually points to fleas. (Don't worry, we have all missed them at some time) It is the area when the dog's hind feet scratch the fur. Depending on the dog's coat colour fleas can be very hard to spot. Yellows are not bad but chocs and blacks can be very hard!

Hi there Gilgem! Just wondering, is Ellie's fur falling out all over or just in patches? Does she actually seem itchy and is her skin in general and especially on the bald bits look a bit pinker than normal or dry and scaly? Also has this started suddenly or has she been losing fur for a while?
What kind of food do you give her, if it's a complete food I would imagine it shouldn't be dietary (unless it's an allergy to a certain food), but you could supplement her diet with oil capsules just in case. Herbal flea collars don't always work in my experience, so it might be worth combing her all over with a fine toothed 'flea comb' but if she's seen the vet he should have done that. The vet saying 'I don't know' is quite unhelpful, if you're worried I would maybe take her back to see a different vet who might suggest some tests to find out what's causing it Smile Another thing that causes fur loss in younger dogs is mange, which dogs catch from their mothers.
Hope that helps, good luck to you and Ellie!

I was thinking an allergy or something
You said said your vet has never saw this before? didnt they offer to look into this further like taking a skin scrape?
I would of asked for a second opinion and also for it to been looked into more.
I hope that you find the cause soon!

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES, IT IS VERY MUCH APPREICITED.

ELLIE'S FUR IS ONLY PATCHY ON BOTH SIDES JUST ABOVE HER RIBS, SHE IS NOT ON A COMPLETE FOOD, AND HER SKIN LOOKS OK AND DOESN'T LOOK SCALY. SHE HAS BEEN GETTING COMBED AT LEAST TWICE A DAY, AS I THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST CASTING AT FIRST !!
