It hadnt even entered my head to castrate my Boy and he's 7 months. If i do get him done it wont be for a long while yet, i just don't see the need, he's only a baby !
Coal is losing his plums next month... he has to interact with my Oh's mum's dogs as she lives next door and look after him when i'm at work and her dog is definately top dog and his tolerance of coal is fading on a daily basis so we really don't want any problems as Jay is a big boy and i'm a little nervous of what he'd do to my cheeky pup who likes nothing better than to pinch his toys right from under his nose!!!
We have no intention of breeding from him so these things combined means we'll get him done sooner rather than later

Personally, i would castrate as early as possible. I got Leo done at 7 months, and i'm very glad i did. I can only see pro's for neutering early, not cons. Not only does it eliminate the possibility of testicular cancer but it will also stop your dog siring upwanted puppies. Personally i can't see any reason why an everyday joe dick and harry pet owner would want to wait.... Unless they plan to show the dog etc then i personally think its the responsible thing to do.
Corbie's not neutered and he certainly calmed down with age - when we meet young labs now (under a year old) we can't believe how hyper they are in comparison to Corb, but then remember he was also like that
Our vet recommended 6 months but i ended up waiting till 11 months with Pud, not specifically because i wanted to wait until he was older but because he wasn't really showing any of the behaviours (mainly humping) that i would have expected to stop as a result. I got him 'done' when i did because he also had a baby tooth that needed to be removed - the fact that he would need a GA for that made my mind up for me.
Def hasn't had any effect whatsover on jumping up or how exciting visitors are to him.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Pud was fab afterwards - really not sure that he's noticed yet!
Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go ahead and book him in for early March. I have a bit of time off work so will be able to supervise him properly afterwards for a few days.
He is a bit of a humper so hopefully it will eventually help with that. He squats when he pees so it would be good if he carried on that way and never started to **** his leg. But the biggest bonus will be to not be worried about 'accidental pups'!
