I'm not really expecting any replies to this - i just NEED to vent my frustrations. Sorry for this but i am... b***** furious
Polly has kennel cough (already posted for advice, she's going to vets today)... fair enough, you might say, life happens - but I have just found out that the owner of the pup she caught it from KNEW the dog had kennel cough and still brought it into my house to play with Polly.
Is it me, or is this downright inconsiderate and stupid??!!
now our morning routine, which includes us walking for an hour with pals, coming home, chivvying kids off to school whilst getting ready for work and actually managing to get there for 9, which is nearly b***** impossible anyway is out the window for the next few weeks.
So - to make sure we don't pass this on to anyone else, we'll have to either
a) get up at crack-of-sparrow-fart and walk in the dark (again - it was JUST getting pleasantly light)
b) wait until all other doggies have gone so we can go out (making me late for work)
Polly was wondering today why she couldn't play with any of her pals and why i kept having to put her on the lead
NOT to mention the poor thing is suffering with what is clearly a very uncomfortable cough and sore throat, sleepless nights and ....
i'm not sure of the exact treatment yet - I'm seeing the vet today. She just had a gentle walk this morning. It felt too cruel to not take her out . But it may well be that we have to stay in for a while, if that's the case we'll just have to have indoor play time!
I certainly will be letting my 'friend' know how I feel when I next see him. At the moment I'm too annoyed to speak to him - IYKWIM
Really they should not be going out at all. KC will live where the dog has been for a short time infecting all who pass. I keep my dogs at home when they catch it. It can be a killer of very young or very old dogs.
It is inconsiderate to knowingly put other dogs at risk.
One of the dogs at our training class got kennel cough recently, and the owner then kept him away for I think three weeks to try and reduce the risks to all of the other dogs. There is an incubation period, though, so it was hard to be sure at first, but no other dog there got it.
thanks John, I didn't know that it could be passed on that way - we'll definitely stay home for the duration. I'll have to try and keep P occupied with games so she doens't get miserable . vets app. in 1 hour
Just a thought....did your friend know that KC is highly infectious and possibly dangerous to young and old dogs alike???
I only ask, as when one of my dogs (a good few years ago) and one of my sisters dogs got KC, the vet never mentioned a word about how it was passed on, he didn't certainly didn't tell us to keep the dogs at home and he never said it was anything more serious than a common cold in humans. We carried on taking our dogs out and probably spread KC halfway round Essex, through ignorance. Could it be that your friend didn't have a clue either?
At least you now know the facts about KC and you could tactfully mention this to your friend too.
Also is the vet seeing you seperately or told you to leave her in the car, till your appoint, as it will be passed round vet surgery
I was going to suggest leaving her in the car at the vets until it's your turn to go in. I think that a lot of dogs also pick it up when they go to the vets for something else when a kc invecting dog has been in.
