Hello,
My lab Lily is approx 9 1/2 months old. At 6 Months we thought that she was having her first season, she was off her food, sleepy and when we did a tissue test (wiping her lady bits after she had been lying down for a while) we found brownish/reddish discharge, but only a very small amount. Thinking this was her first season (or start of it), we followed the rules of a bitch in season - but it amounted to nothing. The brownish discharge disappeared the next day and there was nothing else. Yesterday whilst we were out on a walk with fellow lab owner, her dog was paying A LOT of attention to Lily's back end so being a little suspicious we did a tissue test, but what was there was only a small amount very watery and brownish liquid. Today there is not much difference – watery brown. I can not clearly identify it as being blood so wanted to know – do seasons normally start off as very watery and brown in colour, and turn more bloody in later days. Lily is very clean and there is no spotting that can been seen on her bedding (her bedding is light brown, so I think what we have seen so far would be hard to see anyway).

Many thanks

Everything you describe, whilst baffling to see is very normal. The unfortunate thing being that every bitch is different and there are no real set rules. However, certainly, some bitches between seasons (and so logically its perfectly possible before her first season) have 'shows' of blood - just a drip or two - on the occasional day. I have a bitch who always has a 'show' day about midway between every season. She also gives off season hormones as for one day the boys becoming jibbering wreaks. Next day, nothing.

BUt then she has a perfectly normal season a few weeks later, and yes indeed they can start their season with a feqw days of browny red blood absolutely. This usually turns proper red days 3 - 5 then tails off completely when she ovulates about days 11 - 16 then comes back for a few more days BUT yes browny blood is very normal.

Hi, this is such weird thing, i have come on to check whether my LilY is having a season and found this post, De Ja Vu? it sounds the same as my query, and i completely didn't expect it yet. I just dont know how to handle this because i have never had a bitch before and am a bit lost. If anyone out there has got any advice and suggestions i would be eternally grateful I really wanted to get lily spayed before her first season but looks like im too late now. Am really worried about this. Please help me put my mind at rest!!!! Surprised

I'm sure it's not a good idea to spay beofre a 1st season, most people recommend spaying halfway between the 1st and 2nd season.

Do you think your bitch is in season now Question

Hi yes i think she may just be starting, i have noticed a few red spots on her bedding but nothing anywhere else, also i took her to my mums and her dog would not stop sniffing her bits. she is also licking around her bits more the last few days.

She is in season....

So she is day one or two.... you can lead walk her avoiding all other dogs until about day 7. From here on in for 14 days or so she must stay home or you risk unwelcome attention and definately unwelcome puppies Wink Then for a week or so tioll day 21 or possibly further lead walk her avoiding other dogs again, then resume as normal but knowe she may be given more attention than usual by males but they cannot make her pregnant even if they do hassle her and even mount her.

There are lots of threads on seasons in the Puppy and Health sections to have a glance at!

The important thing to remember ius that after 7 - 10 days when the blood stops, that is when she is MOST SUSEPTABLE to mating, her season absolutely has not ended and if she were an older dog this would be when you might take to her stud dog.... she is only about half way through her season at this point.

Best!
Di

Thankyou so much for that Diana, I am a lot clearer now and didn't even know how long the bleeding lasted. I will print this info off so i can keep looking at it Confused I just want everything to be okay for us both, I am sure it will be now. Very Happy
Also do they tend to keep themselves clean, a friend of mine said that they bleed and drip all over the place, what do you think maybe a bit of exageration or should i be aware. Sorry to sound so naive but we all have to learn someway.

No learning is sometimes made easier by it being written down, sometimes more cringemaking Wink

Bitches vary. Some keep themselves adn their drips very clean and 'mop up' after themselves. Some seem to take great delight in wiping it up the walls day after day and dripping everywhere ;-0

I think a lot comes down to how heavily a bitch is in season. Some just seem to lose, like woman, a small timbleful all month. Some seem to lose a pint a day! Wink

You will have to see. Chances are her first season will be slightly lighter (like a TEENAGE GIRL) than the others to follow if you don't spay her so it is usually a reasonably gentle introduction....

Well my Lily is very much in season - not quite up the walls - but not as clean as I would have hoped. Was thinking of buying some of those pants for her to wear (advertised as for the protection of your furniture and your dog), but I couldn't face the embarrassment Embarassed . Also it is more likely they she will chew them off within a few mins. She is also a yellow lab, so black pants are a little obvious.

OMG
They don't actually do pants for dogs do they, havn't seen or heard of them but couldn't actually picture a dog in nappy knickers, lmao!!!

anyways thanks for the advice and I know lily is in season now cos the bleeding is still happening, but (keeping fingers crossed) she seems to be very clean with it. Very Happy

Typical, been waiting for half term so i could have time off from school to go dog walking and training and what happens she comes into season. Oh never mind will have to wait for easter hols now. At least it will be a bit warmer i hope Wink
