I've had an on going battle with Chiltern's ear infection since August last year. I posted last year that I was at a loss of what to do as I could not get the drops into his ear and it got to the point he was growling at me.
He screamed the place down at each visit to the vet resulting in me getting annoyed that I was not getting help and support from the vet.
Well 5 months on with a lot of determination and weekly visits to the vet nurse for support and advice on how to train Chiltern to accept the drops we've got there. For the first time since August the Vet can see his ear canal the swelling and wax has greatly been reduced.
He will still need the drops for about another month to start to repair the tissue in the ear canal.
The vet is so pleased and said most people would have given up before now leaving their dogs with a life time ear infection.
for anyone else who is having problems with ears, don't finish the drops and think your dogs ear is ok as he has not been scratching or rubbing and then miss your check up.
If anything it has been a great training exercise I have learnt so much and most importantly I have won the battle of who is boss.
That's wonderful - any tips for getting Bo used to the eardrops?! - he's 4 months old, good-natured, pretty calm and obedient, but not a very cuddly dog... I put some eardrops in before Christmas, and he ran and cowered at the other end of the house afterwards - now he won't let me lift up his ear, letter alone put the drops in... I'm stroking his ears as much as poss, to try and build up to it... I;ve noticed he's scratching a little...
Vicky - we made a real mess with Basils ear drops which we have only now just got back on track from.
We had always handled his ears as a pup but then when he needed drops he hated them. For the two week course I'm afraid we just got on with it, trying to hold him still and keep it calm.
Then afterwards we carried on with drops (only water in the bottle)every day. We had to go back to just touching his outer ear and treating him for letting us, then his inner ear. Then pretending to squeeze the drops but not and so on until he trusted us to let him have the drops. It was a gradual slow process but now i know if he needs drops for an infection we won't have to chase him around the room.
