It's not widely known, but you actually don't need papers for either hips or eyes Sue, but of course, the results are not recorded anywhere. We test quite a few unregistered dogs.
Can I just say to the original poster (so sorry to be rude, I can't change the page back now to get your name!) Charlies mum anyway .... I think you are getting a little bit on the 'wires crossed side', its not your fault at all its very confusing, but I am presuming you don't wish to breed from your boy as you are castrating him and he was a rescue... so therefore you don't need to have him hip scored and eye tested. This whilst in an ideal world folks might do to their pet dogs, is unecessary as part of a general healthcheck, it is specific really to not passing on inherited problems to offspring of the dog, so, therefore, if you are not going to breed, and to be honest you shouldn't in the circumstances, there is no need to undertake these tests.
We speak a lot of BUYING puppies from parents with good hip scores and cleasr eye certificates. And I rather think this may have got a bit muddled into you thinking this was a normal thing to do with a pet dog to test its general health.
If he has no problems showing up, its really not necessary.

Yes Sue, you did read correctly about his Sire's Great Grandparents. Thanks for the info you already have found for me, have printed it out
About the eye tests and hip scores etc (not sure who asked me about this). Even though I will not be breeding from him I still think it is important for the Lab health database that I believe someone is doing on here.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
I live in Telford, John, if you know the nearest specialist for eye tests and the likely cost.
Telford is not the easiest place Hillary. About your nearest would be:-
J V Goodyear BVMS CertVOphthal MRCVS
Springwood Veterinary Group
90 Spring Terrace Road
Burton On Trent
DE15 9DX
As to price, this varies quite a bit on where the test is done. The BVA charge £35.40 including VAT. On top of that you have to add the surgery overheads, so it starts to mount up.
Because of the way the BVA operates a sliding scale, the more you test the cheaper it is, the sessions I organise only charge £21 total! Quite a difference! Private sessions like mine are advertised in Dog World and Our Dogs, so it pays to keep an eye open. Sessions are also often held at Breed Open Shows and Game Fairs. I'm not sure if there will be sessions held at the Midland Game Fair on the 15th and 16th of September, but I can ask the question later this month, and it's only just down the road from you at Weston Under Lizard.
