he pulls like a steam train, has no comprehension of heal and if there is a person or dog around, he is impossible to hold. None of this is his fault I know and I am trying to teach him the basics but I dont think he was ever socialised at all, he is so excited to see everything when he is out but he is so strong, even for hubby so we stopped taking him out for a few days and I worked with him at home on his lead and he is getting the idea but take him out and its hell, it really is, so at the weekend we bought a halti and thought we would try that, but he yanks so hard and just leaps unexpectedly when anyone or anything approaches like a young pup does and we were worried about his neck so after a bit of research, I ordered a canny collar online Sunday and it arrived today, so off we went this evening and OH MY GOD, it works it is truly unbelievable, we were able to stay out for nearly an hour, we found a seat and had him sat as dogs and people past it took a while but he got the hang of staying sat and eating treats as things went on around him he never stopped wagging his tail the whole time, but how long do we keep up the training on this collar before trying a flat collar again? obviously we are saying heal and leaving the lead loose and he has plenty of treats but is it a training aid or will he just revert when back in a normal collar. I so want him to socialise with dogs so I took him to a training class last week after explaining over the phone how excitable he is but we had to leave as he was to much of a distraction at the moment the trainer was lovely but said he needed a bit more basic work first Embarassed well he did have me on my bum twice and launched at a lovely collie covering her in slobber Laughing

The really good thing I found about the canny collar was that it didn't hinder the training I was doing, just reinforced it as I went along.

For a while, without it I couldn't get him in the right place to teach him where 'heel' was and I didn't have the strength to correct him if he shot off ahead.

I just used the canny collar and carried on my training as I was. As it was easier to gete him to heel I could then reward and praise and it gave me the chance to teach him what the word meant and show him what I wanted from him.

I would use it all the time to start with. Then just on the way out on a walk when he was excited, but not on the way back when he was shattered and would walk better anyway. I also used it for going in to training and to GT's etc where I knew there would be excitement and other dogs.

I gradually just tapered it off as he got better, just the first 5 minutes of a walk and if he did well, just took the nose strap off. If he played up, it went back on again.

He now walks to heel 100% of the time when we're on our own and about 70% with other dogs - still working on this one! But I've just realsied I haven't used the canny in months!

Snap!! i also bought one sunday night and used it today!
I was very lucky 2day as over the past few weeks have been stalking dog owners with their dogs out as my pup hasnt been socialised either and watched a few and approached them today to ask if i could bring Rosie to meet their dogs.
We did with the canny collar on and she was trying to leap forward etc but i manged to keep her calm and had her sitting to watch them play.
The owner then brought her 3 rather huge black labs across and they has sniffies she was rather good considering.
We done quiete a bit today as i kept er im my driveway near the path as i knew that the postman and lollypop lady were due and shes feared these before and the postie managed to let her sniff him,she was shaking like a leaf and didnt allow the lolly pop lady anywhere near, she backed and hid between my legs and growled lol but its a start and im taking each day as it comes.
Rosie spent most of the walk rubbing her nose against my leg trying to get the collar off but i was keep talking to her and distracting her that didnt last too long.
I have now a few owners who are prepared to meet me with their dogs so we can see and play comence lol
Best of luck with your pup and keep up the great work, its hard at time but think of the end result! Smile

Karen re 'how long' I would just say as long as it takes.

I use a halti and just used it on Bosun as long as he needed to, unclipping it half way through a walk and using the collar, then taking it in my pocket just in case and eventually leaving it at home. He only pulls when we see another dog now and nothing like he used to.

I'm starting again with Rosie now and she's not as good in the halti as Bosun was so would be really interested to hear from you about how the canny collar works???

As far as im aware Helen when they start to lead you apply gentle pressure backwards and it seems there head gets pulled in gently so they slow down.
Thats the only way i can describe it from when i watched Rosie today.
I got mine from a site and was 11-49 and free delivery and i recieved withing 2 days.
Saw a lady who had her cross bc on one and bless it was far too big and she didnt have a clue i think what it was for as the dog was running circles around her.

Its a collar with another leash under which that is attached around the nose and has no contact with the neck which i love as Rosie didnt choke herself while pulling etc.
I suppose its one of those things you have to try, could you not borrow one?
Worth a try thou helen!

Hi Karen
thats the joy of the canny collar, you can use it as and when needed, as its so easy just to slip the nose strap on and off.
Max is coming up for two and a half years old now and is a very powerfull dog. I suffer with severe spinal problems and without the canny I really wouldnt be able to cope with Max.
We now have a good routine that works perfectly for us.
We always start with the nose piece on, which gives me the control that I need to start off with. Then once Max has settled down and is walking nicely, I just slip the nose strap off and use it as a normal collar Very Happy If he starts to pull then back on goes the nose strap Wink
Max has now got so used to it that as soon as he see's the canny he just sticks his nose up ready for me to put it on bless him Laughing
So in answer to how long, as long as you need Wink
