Hello all
looked around these pages for a while look for everything to do with Lab's
we got "Fergal" on friday night - a real cutey nearly 13wks Choc
he's our first dog.
So far so good i guess, he's constantly by our sides and gets upset when he's left alone. He's already a crate user & used to going outside to do what he should do.
Just at the moment he's taken a liking to my garden lights ! and is moving grass. )
I'm placing him in his crate at night times, but at the moment we are having a few episodes of crying and barking during the night. getting up and letting him out and most of the time he's doing his thing, and back to the cage and sleeping again.
He is a puppy after all, has anyone got any advice on helping him to sleep through the night a little better.
I was thinking of restricting his water intake after a certain time, so his bladder isn't filling.. ?
However, we love him to bits, everyone stops and talks to us and he's so so sociable, walking has been fine, but the last day he's taken to sitting down and not going anywhere.....mmmmmmm... mind you its cold out there.
Have you tried putting an item of yours in the crate with him like an old tshirt with your scent, we used a towel which we slept with for a night. Also do you cover the crate so it is like a den we found this helped.
If you are finding he is crying say 2.30 am set your alarm for a little sooner so you can let him out before he cries so he doesn't associate crying and you getting up to let him out. hth
Someone else will probably be along shortly with more advics
Fergal is sooooo gorgeous, what a lovely pic of him
Theres lots of things you can try to help him sleep through the night but it may just be that he's waking up to go to the toilet in which case he'll grow out of it once his bladder is bigger and can hold more. You could try leaving him an item of your clothing with your smell on it, a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket, covering the crate with a blanket etc which may also help him.
When Alfie was tiny he would sit down when out on a walk and refuse to move, usually i just had to give him lots of encouragement and he'd carry on or i'd just turn round and go home and try again the next day, everythings so new to them and short walks are very tiring so just be patient and you'll get there
Awww how could anyone not love that face!!, Fergal Edward is a handsome young man!! (love his name to).
He will be a little unsettled atm with only just having moved in with you, get up to him one maybe twice in the night, but when he`s NOT crying or barking, atm he`s learning that if he barks/crys somemone will come, so he`ll do it all the more , it may take a little while but he will eventually be able to go all night.
You could also try putting an old t shirt of yours or your partner in with him at night, he`ll then have your scent which will hopefully help to reassure him that you havn`t gone off and left him
