This previous thread should help answer your questions:
http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/ftopict-21642-tattoo.html

Ba sically:

The tattoo is done on the ear flap (the underside).

A clamp, a bit like hair straighteners, has a unique code of letters and numbers in little needles on it, and this is placed onto the ear and held down for a split second, literally. (Corbie yelped when it was done, but it was soon over and he was fine and has no problems with me touching his ear after).

Ink is then smeared over where the pins went in and you have to keep this dry for two weeks while the skin heals over, trapping the ink.

edited to add: breeders tattoo litters so it is done from a very young age so if you have a pup home with you from 8 weeks this will be ok.

I believe they tattoo the ear and it can be done at any age.

My PON was registered in Germany, her tattoo was in her ear and still legible at nearly 15.

The pup is tattooed in its ear, some breeders have this done before the pups are sold so yours is quite old enough to be done.

The number is put on a stamp type tool and the ear is inked, the number is then pressed into the ear, this may make the pup yelp or squeal but s/he`ll soon forget about it.

If you can`t make the GT go here, there`s a list there of registered dog tattooists, you should be able to find one in your area.

Tattoos are well worth doing as an extra safeguard should the unthinkable happen and your furbaby goes missing, it doesn`t always happen to other people Smile

Ruby was tattooed at 9 weeks old - I will be tattooing my next pup as young also for a few reasons, 1 they are small enough to hold in your arms while they are tattooed, 2 it protects them from day 1, 3 as they are pre vac you dont have the hassle of keeping them away from water (as the ear has to be kept dry for 2 weeks)
