Hi again everyone!

Just to confuse me even more on the matter of feeding... when I had Brady at the vet for his limp yesterday, she advised that I change him onto adult food as soon as possible to stop him from putting on too much weight and to even out his rate of growth. He is quite a big puppy (if you can still call him that Laughing ), at 26kg and six months old.

Anyway, we are going to finish off what is left of his puppy food, gradually introducing an adult food. He's currently on Beta puppy/junior, but his "business" hasn't been very firm at all since we put him onto this about six weeks ago Embarassed (he was on Iams puppy before that, but have heard/read some horror stories about their testing practices)

So, my question is - when we change to an adult food would it be ok to change brand, or should we just graduate onto the adult version of Beta? (Bearing in mind that he's already been changed from Iams in his short life)

I would like to try him on Burns or Hills, but I don't want to disrupt his system too much Confused

As always, any advice much appreciated Very Happy

Rona

Hi Rona,

At 6 mths we changed Ben over to Adult food (as advised by our vet),he is now fed twice a day on adult food to help control his growth and has one meal at 7:30am and the other at 5:00pm.

I don't think it would make much difference changing Brady on to adult food of a different make. If you change to the adult version of the one he is on you still have to do it slowly the same as changing brand. At least this way he doesn't have to be changed twice.

Good luck with what ever you decide Very Happy

Cristina

I reckon to change to 2 meals at six months, dropping the lunch one. Years ago when Katy went Diabetic I changed to feeding her 4 times a day to help even out her sugar intake. Because Big Bad Bethany was a baby at that time she stayed on 4 meals also. When Katy finally died I decided to get Bethany on a sensible feeding regime but of course BBB was having none of that! Talk about a "Hard done by Labrador"!!!

Regards, John

Hi Rona

I have recently changed Smudge's food to James Wellbeloved and they actually do a Junior/performance variety which is for 6 months and above. I'm not sure if I have imagined it but I think he is growing less now - could just be his age of course (nearly 8 months).

Thanks to everyone for their posts about the 3rd meal - we will think about cutting Smudge's out now based on your advice.

All the best,
Nicola.

Hi Rona,

We were rather late cutting out Bradleys 3rd meal, and did so at about 8 or 9 months. We then began to feed him at 8.30am & 6p.m. which worked fine right from the start. At first we thought he was looking at us and longing for his lunch time dinner slot, but we soon realised he is always looking for food !! lol.

He get's the occasional healthy veg filled Kong during the daytime, and a carrot to nibble on everyday, and is doing better (weightwise) on just 2 meals.

Incidently, we switched from Royal Canin to Purina, when Bradley was about 5/6 months old, and has worked wonders for his stools. We started of by mixing the 2 foods together and gradually got him of the Royal Canin.

Hope it all goes ok for you, i've read a lot about both Burns and Hills so hope Brady gets on well with his new food.

Bye for now,

Julie

Thanks everyone for your replies. Think I'm going to go ahead and order a bag of Burns online, their delivery charges are very reasonable - even for the Highlands & Islands Smile

The way I see it at the moment, the Beta isn't making toilet time much fund for anyone, especially for scooping! (sorry guys Embarassed )

So hopefully the change will improve things in that department, and I've read so many good things about Burns. Think it'll be worth the extra pennies Smile

So it's all been a bit of an adventure for our pup this week... training victory on Monday, trip to the vet and first bath on Tuesday, change to "big dog" feeding routine and now graduation to adult food! Hope it isn't all too much for the poor wee guy #Puppy dog

Thanks again for the advice,

Rona
