Heya we got 8-week old Toby yesterday and I'd like to start clicker taringin straight away as I have two children and would like to be bale to have some sort of control over Toby (as I have no control whatsoever over the kids! LOL)...

I tried to "charge" the clicker yesterday by clicking the clicker and then treating Toby when he seemed to react to the noise. However, it was quite hard to find a treat that he liked (settled on hot dog in the end) and then when he realised I was holding the treats he completely ignored the clicker and just tried to get them from my hand...

I have fallen at the first hurdle! help!...hehe...

ok to 'charge' the clicker you need to click - treat, click treat etc etc
then wait til he's a little distracted and click - if he looks up straight away then you've charged the clicker!

have the treats on the kitchen side or on a shelf etc if it helps. once you've charged the clicker, you can start training behaviours/actions etc.

i think if you do a search in 'training' or 'puppy' or 'general lab chat' there are some good posts about clicker training.

i'm at work and can't open some bits of the site so can't look now Sad

also there is a book by Karen Pryor and a website by her that is full of tips etc!

happy clicking

found a thread with a longer answer from me and a web link

http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/ftopict-17122-.html

he'll still be settling in so don't worry too much if his concentration isn't up to much, just a minute or two several times a day to help charge clicker then after he's cottoned on you should be able to just do a little charging at start of training session before moving on to sit etc.

at about 11 weeks i taught coal to give paw in one day! and alternate paws too Very Happy

Brill thanks - I've actually ordered Karen Pryor's book and am just waiting for it to arrive (sorry should have mentioned that Embarassed )

Was just wondering how to start and to see if I'm doing it right. Will try for a few minutes a few times tonight then and see how we go...I was definitely going along the right lines so that's good.

Will he pick things up quite quickly once we've got the clicker "charged" or does it just depend on the puppy?...

xx

Also on another note, am i ok just saying "no" sharply to him when he's being naughty, i.e. nipping on clothes or rooting through the bin or should I be doing something else instead/aswell...have taught the family already to fist their hands if he goes for their fingers...is that right?

xx

yes using No is ok.

if he nips you or the kids, just 'yelp' really loudly, almost squeal and stop playing with him - helps him understand that nipping not allowed and if he does it the fun stops!

Coal picks up Clicker training really quickly, concentrate on teaching one new thing at a time til he's got it sorted to help him.

Heya everyne...following on from this post, I've again tried to use the clicker and am feeling fed up again! As soon as I sit down with Toby and the clciker he starts nipping at my hands still...We've all been really good about saying no to him to get him to stop nipping all the time and I think this is starting to work, but I feel like I can't do any kind of training with him as as soon as I sit down and give him some time, he then starts jumping up on me and nipping my hands. I then get up and walk away and try again five mintes later but the same just happens again.

I've tried sitting with him and not moving until he calms down which he does eventually do, but then as soon as I raise my hand to start clicking, he just starts nipping and jumping up again...

Any ideas??....

xx

Ok, this post has roused my curiosity. I had a clicker when Rox was a pup, but never got to grips with the thing, it is now sat on top of my stereo.

What i wonder is, in a training club etc, when you click, does every dog aroung you think they have done good? What if one dog is not behaving, the owner next to them clicks their own dog, do both dogs think their behaviour is being praised? In that scenario, is clicker training only any good on a one to one basis ? Forgive me if I miss understand the click/reward system.

You are right Jacque. I cannot clicker mine together as they have no idea who is being clicked and what for! When I did a training session with Millie at a school (although I don't go there anymore) we did a clicker session in a field and we were spread apart so they really couldn't hear any other clicks. I did notice too that Mills was totally focused on me anyway, so didn't notice what was going on around her.
