Even though I'm a new puppy mummy like you, I would back up the advice from Lucy and say that Maisie is doing it because she thinks you react to it. It's the same as with a human baby. If Toby howls or whines at any point in his crate then we just ignore him completely and as soon as he stops we go over to the crate and praise him loads and decide if he needs to be let out etc...not sure if this is going to work in a few days as we're a day behind you (picked him up on Sunday), but he has whined at night and also in the day sometimes. I think the difference is that he's been left for long periods for the last two days as I've had to work...we'll see what happens tomorrow when I'm at home a lot of the day...!
Just try not to go to her when she is calling as this is a reward in her eyes and make her do itmore
Set you alarm for night trips to about 2-3am before she starts howling but do not go down if she is howling.
We have all been at this stage so don't panic, try to catch some sleep during day,pop her in her crate when she has had a play so she will have a sleep.
Poor you, sure it'll get better with time, but like you say, when they are creating, time seems to stand still!!
Dont have much inspiration for you i'm afraid, though all advice so far sounds good, earplugs, drowsy medicine(for you) and a brandy before bed (for you OR pup!!) might also help!! Got the joy to go through myself hopefully soon, then i'll be the frazzled one in need of help1
Hope your daughter is better, if the pup doesnt pull them off, put wet towels on your radiators to keep the air moist, works wonders for croup.
Sadly I work during the day so I can't catch up on sleep, this morning I had a screaming child and howling puppy competing for my attention. So tired I am struggling to type.
Have put pup in bed and daughter too so will try and rest.
How long should a pup sleep in the day abd how often?
hmm sorry can't help too much with this one as I haven't been around Toby that long..can say though that in the past few days he's slept for an hour, up for 30-60 minutes then back to bed for an hour and then it goes on till bed time. If I want to do something and I can't watch him though, I just put him in his crate with a kong or some kibble and lock the door. It keeps him out of my way (and my toddler's way if he's around) and puts him in his place...don't knacker yourself out - there's no point having maisie out of her crate for hours and hours if you can't do anything with her cos she's kept you up all night...
when you let her out, have you managed to play with her to knacker her out? I find with Toby that I put him on his little lead and walk him up and down the garden five or six times and then he's quite sleepy...
Our normal routine will be up at 6.30 breakfast play in the garden, I leave at 7.30 and my son leaves at 8.15 so he takes her out and plays until he goes. She isn't in her crate whilst we are out as it is 12.30 when a friend goes in and lets her out and gives lunch and has a play, son gets home at 4 and he lets her out plays with her and I give her tea when I get back at 5, she is out of the crate all day so doesn't go into it until say 10 when we go to bed.
This week with Eleanor being off I am at home all day and it has been a nightmare, I don't know what I will do when I go back to work if she is howling all night, hubbie was quite calm about it last night but doubt he will be if she carries on.
She is still howling downstairs, feel like I could just walk out right now.
if she can hear you but not be with you she will howl - its torture for a puppy to be seperated, in the wild a left behind puppy is a dead puppy so she is obeying every little instinct her body is telling her.
Soshe is in her crate now while you are home? Do you feed her in thecrate and put toys in there and make in all snug and a good place to be?
Ok so do you put her in the crate at any other time or just when she goes to bed at ten?...
Sounds like the crate could be a bit of a life saver if you could get her to use it a bit more as relief and a break for you?...
Just ignore her if she howls. Puppies learn really really quickly and she is only howling for attention so if she learns that it doesn't get her attention then she'll stop. Just remember to go in as soon as she stops howling, then give her a treat and loads of praise...
