Hi all,
Well we picked up our pup at 10am yesterday, she travelled home really well and happily travelled in the car.
My daughter aged 2 and half as soon as she saw her said, don't want puppy, I was so upset, she spent the first two hours on the sofa not daring to move or stroke the pup that was very obviously bemused why someone didnt think she was wonderful. I was so worried that I was going to have to take her back. However after a couple of hours she came round and by the end of the day she was running around and playing with her. That was a relief.
Toilet training was very hit and miss, she sniffs the floor all the time and not always because she wants to go to the loo so my legs certainly got some use in and out all the time, she did an enormous poo in the kitchen (easy to clean up) couldn't believe how huge it was for a 12 week old puppy.
She is fed beta puppy and for her age 3 months it said to feed 420g (i presume that is per day), it also said that to feed 3 times a day so I divided it by 3 which she wolfed down! Not sure it touched the sides.
We had a great day (she stinks though, how soon can I bath her) and daughter went to bed at 7 and all was wel with the world.
Well it was until 10 o'clock when we heard weird noises coming from our daughters room, she was gasping for breath and it was so frightening, poop pup was put into the kitchen and we rushed her off to casualty, of course as soon as we got there she was much better, and by the time we were seen at 1.30am (dont get me started on the NHS) 3 and half hours later she was fine again except for sounding like she smoked 40 a day when she talked. I was very worried that it was an allergy to the pup but the doctor assured us it was croup and gave us a list of what to do. There were 3 other very small children in casualty with the same thing.
We got home at 2 and of course pup was wide awake and playful hearing us all come in, the kitchen was a mess as we hadn't put her in her crate as we rushed out of the house, she went out for a wee in the newly falling snow and then I put her in her crate. She howled for an hour (and oh boy doesn't it feel like longer) but then she settled fine and is still asleep now.
I am going to get her up now and see to daughter who is also asleep, I can only hope that day 2 is less stressful.
Pup has 3 names at the moment, Maisie (OH doesnt like that) Maple (I don't like) and Rosie.
Oh dear, not the best start for you then, hopefully today will be better, try to find a routine with your puppy, I find it makes it much easier and I'm sure that my puppies have been happier for it too.
I hope that your daughter is feeling better today,
Sounds like you may have to call the puppy Rosie then if niether of you like the other names
It does get better very quickly, our charlie is twelve weeks old now and we did not no how we could cope at first, but this is a excellent site for advice and just reassurance so keep posting any questions and every one is keen to help. Hope your daughters better soon. sure with a new friend to play with she soon will be.
Oh what a day you have had! Hope your little girl is feeling better. It does seem like hard work for a little while but things soon fall into place. It is all so worth it. Truffle is 19 weeks old on Tuesday and is a treasure

Morning
sorry for not replying to messages, I have been so exhausted trying to get over losing a whole nights sleep when Eleanor was ill. Puppy is now called Maisie and up until last night was a treasure. She was sleeping through the night, went into crate howled one hour first night, half an hour second and not a sound the 3rd, but last ngiht she woke at 3am howling so i went and let her into the garden which she used and then back into the crate, she then howled for the rest of the night, I am so tired today I can't think straight.
Why is she doing this now when i thought she was settled?
I have come upstairs to get dressed and again she is downstairs howling in the kitchen, I dont know why it is all going so wrong, someone please help
Oh Carol lovely, it isn't all going wrong chick....you sound just like me when we'd had Pheebs a week! Be back in 5 mins with more. Hang in there x x x x
OK, I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination......but I'll offer support and tell you what we did
Phoebe used you scream merry hell when we left her - we tried to build it up from 2 mins to 5 to 10 to 15 and so on, until she'd been left for a couple of hours no bother. Took us WEEKS! However, we made the biggest mistake initially by going back to her WHILE she was yelling, therefore making a rod for our own backs. So she thought "ahh mum comes back when I squeal" so she squealed more! Phoebe was much worse while we were in the house.
Maisie can probably hear you moving about which is unsettling to her - she can hear you, smell you and probably see you moving under the door yet she can't get to you......see where this is leading?
The main thing is while she is crying do not open the door - this just reinforces the crying.....she's calling you, you respond by going to her and so she thinks ahh that worked, i'll do that again! Even if you have to bang on the door to halt the crying BEFORE you go in or let her out, so be it.
This is what we did with Phoebe but hey, there will probably be other people with other advice- you just have to pick up the bits that work for you and dump the rest
Don't be disheartened - this baby is only 12 weeks old, probably used to being in company all the time, is just settling in, getting used to new people, new smells, new environments....she will need an adjustment period Believe me though please when I say it gets better....honestly it does! You are just having a rough day or 2.....it will get so much easier if you get a routine and stick to it
What is your routine like at the moment? What happens from morning til bedtime?
