I agree with what Jules's says about how we (mostly!) learn to love the dog we get (like we do our kids I suppose!!!). I have loved to pieces every one of my pups, but thinking about it, I think I love living with the more pushy/cocky pups more is because I'm a closet worrier Laughing and the confident pups bring out the best in me, whereas the more needy pups worry me as I think I get too wrapped up in their anxieties.
Also I love the actual training aspect of bring on pups so I like the enthusiasm and plonkerness of the larger-than-life pups, whereas my needy pups have needed less actual 'training' but a lot more 'life experiences'. Also I've noticed that the needy/sensative pups have related to the whole family and have been at their happiest in the midst of family life, whereas my plonkers have been family dogs, but I'm their 'bestest mate' and one that they actual listen too and obey.

Writing this, its just dawned on my that I'm a human 'W' which makes me a better match for a 'P' Laughing Laughing Laughing

Diana- do you temperment-test your owners-to-be!!!!? Because I'm thinking that, along with observing your pups closely, you should move all your prospective-pup-owners in with you too for 8 weeks and then you could really match the 'W's to the 'P's!!!!!

I'm finding this thread fascinating....I can see lightbulbs glowing all around as we all start to twig!

Becs (W) and the Gang (mix of 'P's and 'W'!!!)

Wise words as always Di,
And isn't it wonderful that they are so different, labs they may be but they're as individual as us humans.

That was a wonderful post Di! (as always!) Thanks for sharing.

Toby is probably the least complex dog I've ever known - he's one of the all play, all the time dogs who loves everyone, especially children and all other dogs whether they're a great dane or a chihuahua. Laughing Life is all so simple to him - love everyone all the time even if they growl at you. Rolling Eyes Laughing

I've thought long and hard since reading this thread about whether our Maxi falls under the "p" or "w" lab Confused
I would say that he is mostly "w" but alot of that I was putting down to his lack of socialisation when he was a pup,but then on the other hand we do have a pritty busy household and hes possitively bomb proof at home so I'm still undecided Confused Rolling Eyes

Facinating post indeed Di, I never realised that it was possible for 2 dogs of the same breed to be so different. My own Lab Hugo is obviously the epitome of the W Dog.. I love him to bits but he's not what i wanted and certainly not what i expected in a Lab. I am coming to terms with him though lol. I think he would go far with some proper training, he is awsomely clever and desperate to make me happy but i am the boss, he's not atall worried abut anyone else.

Just thought I'd BUMP this sticky because I like it Smile

I have a dog that at times is a 'P' and at times is a 'W', so he keeps me on my toes.
Although I can now spot quite easily which mood he's in Smile

What an interesting post. Cadbury is a definite 'P' and I suspect certain things we will never entirely overcome (his love for everyone and the thinking that everyone should love him back and to ensure that I will jump up at them, trait, for instance).

Love your dog for who he is and accept his flaws, just like we love our friends and family and accept their flaws.

Who wants a perfect dog anyway?
