Tudorcourt is of course the affix of Phil Hopper, just over the hill from me at Hazlemere! And of course, Aughacasla Sam of Drakeshead is my Amy's Great Great Grandsire.
Aughacasla Sam was born in Ireland in 1993 and spotted by John Halstead for what he was. He was brought to England where the Halsteads added their Drakeshead affix to him and made him up into a Field Trials champion. Not that he was completely unknown to him, his great granddam was Drakeshead Wisp, bred by the Halsteads she won the IGL Retriever Championship for Mr R. S. Hill in 1978 and his great great grandsire was the Westead Tan of Drakeshead, litter brother to Westead Shot of Drakeshead who won the championship for Sandra Halstead in 1979.
He’s a mixture of the Irish lines, Derryboy on the dog line and Seanbaile on the bitch side, plus English lines such as Swinbrook, Pocklington, Swinbrook and several of HM the Queen’s Sandringham dogs.
Over the years there have been some wonderful dogs, who have just never been able to pass their genes on to their offspring. But a quick look at Sam shows that this in not the case with him! My database is not complete but I can count 19 Field Trials Champions amongst his progeny including Craighorn Bracken who won the Retriever Championship in 2001 and Styperson Dipper, winner in 1999! Not a bad record!
