Hi everyone - i'm worried !
Maggie is now 7.5 months old, and has just been mounted by a boy (dog of course!) at the beach
i have noticed recently that she has been cleaning herself a lot, and weeing more often, almost like shes marking her scent when out on a walk - but we haven't noticed anything else - so i've been unsure if she is in season or not, and my OH thinks i'm just being over-neurotic. We have always planned to have her speyed after one season.
Anyway, at the beach she was off lead (as we didn't really have any evidence that she is in season) and started playing with another dog. I noticed that he started really sniffing her behind, and then mounted her. I ran over and chased him off, but he was on top of her for about 5 seconds by the time i got over.
3 questions -
1) Should i be worried ? Could anything have happened ? I couldn't really see what was going on underneath because it was dark. Should i take her to the vet ?
2) I'm going to try the white sheet trick to see if she is bleeding tonight. And i have been reading about JohnWs tissue test - now REALLY embarrasingly i don't know where her vulva is ! can anyone not eating or with a strong stomach try and explain to me where i should wipe ? Or just right from under her tail all the way round ? GOD - I'M SO EMBARRASSED !
3) am i overreacting about the dog on the beach ?
Awww Claire don't be embarrassed, I am in pretty much the same boat as you and I dont know all the ins and outs, so to speak, of Rolo's laydeeez bits
There is a first time for everything and I will hold my hand up and say I am ignorant too and wait for someone with knowledge and experience to enlighten us both
So no advice here just wanted to say you are not alone!

Oh sweet woman! Ok, think that the vulva is the same as our vulva. The two lip flaps that hide our ******. If you go down in a vertical line from her anus where she poos from under her tail, about 4 inches she will have a pink bit like a seashell with a slit in the middle and this is what she has nearly on the ground when she crouches to wee. This is where her season (period) blood will come from and is her vulva. It will swell a bnit when she comes into season but yes your best bet is a white sheet over her bed, she cannot FAIL to show you if she is losing blood when she squiggles and lays all night on her bed losing little bits and pieces of blood.

No but the chances are about 99% percent that she is fine. She maybe early days towards her season or even in, but not only would he needed to have properly penetrated her, and that takes some doing even when they are in season, she woould of had to of been about 10 - 12 days into her season to be ovulating and accept the few sperm that might have sneedked out of his bits in her ****** to make her pregnant.
Do the sheet test for a couple of nights. If no blood is there then don't worry. if it is then write back and we can all talk again. There is no mad rush. There is a 'aftermate' injection that can be given up to 5 weeks after mating to abort puppies. Not ideal but as a last resort thing it is there.

I think its unlikely the dog will have had enough time to penetrate Maggie Claire, but someone more experienced than me will be able to advise there.
Maggie`s vulva will be just below her anus, when she squats to wee it may be visible, if you lift her tail you will see it , if she`s in season or about to start it may well be larger than normal and therefore more easy to see.
So, wipe from just below her anus and slightly under her rear, that will show blood if there is any. , if you find you can see her vulva once you`ve lifted her tail, then just dab the tissue in that area, that will work to.
Right, first of all, you are NOT a bad mother...it could have happened to anyone.....you we're just unlucky and it happened to you and Maggie.
Ok, please don't be embarrassed - how are you to know all these things? Her vulva is her "lady garden" "foo foo" "fanny" "bagina" "******" or whatever word you have for describing your own ******. It looks a bit like the pointy end of a lemon and you can see it when she rolls over onto her back. You will have obviously looked at her pooing (we all do it - wink) so that is not where you want to be wiping. Get a white piece of kitchen roll or loo roll and wrap it round your pointing finger, with the other hand, part the "lemon" and it will appear pink and might me a bit moist - this is the part you need to wipe....only about 2 cm in length. Inspect tissue and see what you have......red/brown is likely to be blood and you need more advice from someone more experienced than me as she may need an injection to prevent a pregnancy as she is FAR too young. If it's clear or you see nothing then you are probably "safe", although like humans, they can catch nasty bugs which may cause an infection.....again you need more advice from someone more experienced.....hopefully someone will see this and help you.
It is unlikely that you will have missed a season - they do tend to drip at least once somewhere ......
Don't be embarrassed - PM me if you can't post back here for embarrassment.
In my experience with Ruby the anatomy of the bitch REALLY changes too -maybe you should have a look at her in her 'normal' state so you will know if she isnt in season and you will cetainly notice the difference when she is in season. The anatomy has to change you see to allow for the pentration of the dog when mating. Thats was far more obvious to mynovice eye that anything else. HTH
