Hi everyone, first an apology for not introducing myself before posting a question. I was so relieved to find your website and get some advice I just ploughed straight in, probably why I am a lab lover!
Thanks firstly to the kind people who replied to my question anyway. We have been lucky enough to have dogs for over 33 years, all rescue except the last two labradors.
Our first lab ,my beloved Oliver was our second rescue and came with some serious problems which we never quite sorted and I think that is why I am so scared of things going wrong with our new black lab, the adorable bundle of fur we named Monty.
Our second lab Penny, (a chocolate)we got as a puppy and she was just short enough of perfect to make her fun.
They both died of laryngeal paralysis Oliver in the midst of a day out in the hills and Penny after the op to supposedly cure it and 2 years of ill health.
I was so upset about losing Penny it took me 18 months to summon up enough courage to get another dog.
Anyway it is wonderful to have a dog again, you meet the nicest people too, thanks again Shirley

Hello and welcome Shirely and Monty.
How sad to read about your beloved Oliver and Penny. I am not surprised it has taken you a while to take the plunge again, I would be the same.
I hope Monty brings you many, many happy years.
