Hello all and good evening...
Just been reading "labs for dummies" in the bath and notice that it says I should be cleaning puppy's teeth every week. Is this right, what do i need to buy and how do i do it!? Supposedly if I do this right from the start then it'll be good for his teeth and he'll also be used to having this done but am a bit daunted by this prospect (adding to the other terrifying things I've been reading about!!) hehe...

I tend to use the little finger caps with bristles and doggie toothpaste both of which available from Pets at Home and a long brush for the back teeth.
I am never very successful getting the back teeth but Max is nearly 5 now and so far no problems, or tartar!
Max loves the taste of the toothpaste (marrowbone flavour) so it is easy to do.
I do know that human toothpaste is poisonous as it contains flouride.
Have fun, and wear old clothes. You will get covered.

Hi,
i used to use the finger caps too, they worked well and basil accepted it quite easily.
now i dont teeth clean at all ( ), i just give regular chews and bones and his teeth are gleaming. When his interest wears off for chewing (if!) then i may have to go back to the toothbrush.
I'm pretty sure you shouldn't brush a young pups teeth (not before they get their adult ones) as the teeth are small and gums sensitive. What i did at this stage was get Basil used to the toothbrush in his mouth and us the back of the brush (ie not the brissles) to just touch his gums and teeth.

I don't usually start to brush the teeth until the adult ones are through. I do, however, get them used to having their teeth looked at and my fingers in their mouths (usually when I'm retrieving things they shouldn't be eating) and getting them used to the taste of the toothpaste (I put a little on my finger and rub it round their gums ).
By the time I get round to actually brushing their teeth they don't bat an eyelid.
Just a word of warning....If you use one of those rubber finger tube brushes, please make sure it's a tight fit. They get very slippery and easily come off in the pups mouth and they are just the right size to be swallowed whole and cause a blockage.

i've been trying to brush Darcy's teeth but without any great success. he just chews the brush thing with my finger in it.
i suppose reading the above i'm maybe expecting too much and will just be happy with him licking the toothpaste of it. he has plenty of chew toys in the meantime
