I'd love to see a video of the line dancing too, Ann. Can you post one? Very Happy

I generally walk with Charlie on my left because I find that easiest. However, I do also practise having him on the right, because if you are walking along a country lane with no footpath then you should face the on-coming traffic and therefore I feel that it is safer to have the dog on the right, as far away from everything as possible. He will walk on either side, really.

Helen.

oohhhhhh line dancing - FAB!!!!

We used to do a class called 'pet obedience' which was either side and te positioning of sits etc wasnt strict THEN we went onto 'proper' obedience and LORD five degress off centre and it was a no no (we didnt do that for very long though) but yes with agility you have to work to both and they have to come to both sides - we have been recommended to use the command 'heel' for left (or close or whatever) and 'side' to right.

I walk Indy on the right, purely because at first she pulled like a train and my right arm is my strongest.....i don't think it matters all that much.....whichever works for you is best, holly & Indy

As Di said, for gundog work it does not really matter. We have a handler with a bad left leg so he always handles on the right.

But obedience is a different matter. Because you are working a set course on heelwork it could be an unfair advantage to handle on the other side so S2 regulations specify dogs to be worked on the left unless the judge gives permission.

For showing, ideally a dog should handle on either side! I remember a couple of years ago the judge in the "Gamekeepers Ring" at Crufts had us going round the ring clockwise instead of anticlockwise. And of course, in the junior KC handling classes you MUST be able to handle on both sides.

Regards, John

If I want a dog to walk on the left hand side I use 'close' or 'heel' if on the right hand side I use 'side'.

Doesn't matter what word you use, as long as the dog knows what you want him/her to do Very Happy

It is good to have them to be able to walk on both sides!!!
