Up until now i have been training Coal to walk on my right side.... basis being we have to walk country lanes and you should walk facing oncoming traffic and i'd rather i was between him and the cars!
but everywhere seems to say they should walk on your left... Does it actually matter???

They mainly say walk on the left if wanting to do obedience, and also on the left so when walking on a path they are on the inside so they can not jump out in the road. If you wanted to do agility, they need to be able to do both.
Just seen this - heel was taught for our gundog breeds originally on the left because most guns are right handed and so carry their gun on the right. So if walking up through a wood and the gun was quickly raised to fire, it wouldn't hit the dog which was safely out the way on the left.
left or right it makes no difference at all, its whichever side suits you and you want to stick you. left is usually better to keep yourself between the dog and the traffic but its all personal.

I walk Danny on thr right hand side - I know how you feel because you look soooo different to everyone else!!!! Like at our training class - everyone else handles their dog on the left but seen as its only general training and not strict obedience the trainer doesn't mind and says "walk them on whichever side you feel comfortable".
I just could never get the hang of having the dog on my left hand side, I don't know why...I don't feel in control when holding the lead in my left hand . I also like to walk facing the traffic if walking beside a road, and like having the dog on the inside too, so walking them on the right also meets this criteria..
Re: Tammy's comment about agility - I'd better get practicing my left then as we're hoping to start agility soon!!!
As Diane said it doesnt really matter which said you want to use the word heel for. My daughter Steph is disabled and we first had to use to different words to help her and Kimmy to understand which side we wanted him on and its kind of stuck now. We use 'close' for the left side and 'heel' for the right side. Now that Steph and Kimmy do line dancing together we have to use the two different words and Kimmy now knows which side to be on. So its all a matter of what you feel comfortable with and what your pup gets used to.

Affraid so Di, and there quite good at it. Kimmy wears his Pets As Therapy jacket and Steph can often be seen following him around the floor as he's knows all the moves and knows when the next treat is coming. There part of a line dancing demonstration team.

Superb... you haven't got any footage you can put on the web have you? (I wouldn't have a CLUE how to do that and ask so casually - chuckle!) Our breed club newsletter might be interested in this....
