Our 11 month old lab tilly has started to run off as soon as we tell her to leave her ball so we can throw it again. She used to drop the ball/toy on command first time every time but now she just wags her tail and runs off. If we use a treat to get her to drop the ball she takes the treat and then trys to grab the ball back again as we lean down to pick it up!
Its as if she wants to play fetch but doesn't want to give us the ball so we can throw it.
She has also started to leg it when we recall her to go back on the lead. again she will just run about 10 feet away and as soon as we walk towards her, the tail goes up and starts wagging and she just runs off again.
PLEASE any advice would be great.

Sorry, can't help because Doobs does exactly the same. Used to drive me crackers but now I don't worry. Little Gracie and Millie are tops for bringing the ball back though, so they make up for it!

Before Willow I would have said try to give her something 'better' which worked for every other dog I have had....
Willow is flying hoopla ring thing mad and it took her ages to get it into her head that I couldnt/wouldnt throw it again if it was still in her mouth. Ignoring her often sent her demented though. I had to take every opportunity with objects she wasnt obsessed with first to get ger to realise wha she had to do-
Jet seemed to pick this up quickly and she saw him getting all the fun- eventually the penny dropped.
Luckily the word drop or leave works fine- but it took a while at first.
I am so glad its only her balls and rings when outside that she gets crazy with! Rolling Eyes

Sorry, no real advice as Boomer is just as bad. She'll normally drop or leave when asked, but if it's something she really wants that is smallish, she'll try and swallow it whole - nightmare!

........... take 2 balls. Ruby learned this way she would drop theone she had for the one you have and then you throw them alternately.

Hi Lucy. I agree with Vicky. Cally's seven months now and does a great fetch and drop at the end, the training class that I went to told me to take 2 balls, and when Tilly comes back with the first, bounce the second up and down, or if you can find a 'squeaky' one, squeak it, makes it more 'exciting' for them to let go of the other. The trainer I went to also said to only treat at the end of the game, when you take control of both balls to put them away, and keep particular items which are reserved for 'fetching' only. Works for us, now Cally plays with one ball, or any thrown toy and drops it quite reliably. worked for us!!!

Good Luck! x

Tried that for months Vicky - didn't work with Doobs!!! I just get the feeling he doesn't like to catch balls - he would rather carry it (or rather his fetchstick) around in his mouth. Don't blame him for not wanting to play fetch though - when he gets to the ball he skids and lands on his bum! So undignified!!!

Now that's strange Sonia, cos we can't persuade Cally to 'Hold' or 'carry' anything for long, do they usually prefer one thing to the other?! x

Thats an interesting question Anne!!! Funny, now I think of it, Mills and Gracie play fetch but don't carry things around, and Doobs won't play fetch (or rather bring the ball back) but loves to carry his ball around. Weird! We may be onto something!!! Idea
