Rosie has stared to growl and bark at strangers and i wanted to know is this normal or her testing and if it is how do i overcome this as i really dont want a barky dog
Next doors dog is a right barker and sits at my fence and barks allday at me, is she copying this or is she saying hi in dog language?
I've just seen this and I'm having exactly the same thing with Fidgit.
She now barks at almost anyone she doesn't know and I'm not sure how to stop her.
It started with her barking at the postmen when he dropped the mail in the letterbox and I didn't worry about that as I don't mind if she barks when strangers come near the house. However, she has now taken this one step further and barks (she doesn't growl) and anyone she doesn't know.
She is in no way agressive but in reality is more on the timid side, ie., VERY hand shy. Would this be a case of 'get them before they get me' do you think?
Tilly will growl and woof if she is not expecting something - say if the doorbell goes. Or if it's a shadow out of the window etc. She doesn't growl at strangers if we are out on walks - she just jumps up on them !!
We try not to discourage her doing this too much but we sort of say 'It's ok it's only .....' as we would still want her to bark as a deterent if someone was lurking round the house.
Sorry I can't be of any further help on the matter, I hope that it settles down for you both!
" It started with her barking at the postmen when he dropped the mail in the letterbox and I didn't worry about that as I don't mind if she barks when strangers come near the house. However, she has now taken this one step further and barks (she doesn't growl) and anyone she doesn't know. "
....You helped me hugely by writing this Now look at the above from a dogs point of view.
Postman comes, makes a wierd noise at MY letterbox, so I bark to warn him that I am big and strong and he'd better go away. Mum doesn't mind, doesn't correct me in any way. And, sure enough every SINGLE time postman goes away.
Little do the dogs know that is his JOB and their barking had nothing to do with it Postmen and milkmen are the worst thing in the world for teaching dogs that barking at strangers and wierd noises is 'ok'. Because every time, indeed, they leave.
Then, confusingly, I bark at OTHER strangers to tell them to push off, and mum gets cross, tells me off or, even better still, fusses me and cuddles me and tells me not to be scared.... wow.... you humans are baffling
Then Tracey writes:
" We try not to discourage her doing this too much but we sort of say 'It's ok it's only .....' as we would still want her to bark as a deterent if someone was lurking round the house. "
So again, its ok to bark at some things, but not begin barking at others, neither of which the dog can distinguish between but one is OK because you MIGHT one day be pleased she saved the day, but if someone came to the door you liked and she stood and barked and growled you be most disturbed
Aren't we straightforward
I'm not mocking anyone at all. These perfect examples fell into my horrible hands and are very very common indeed.
More in a min.

i'm not sure how to stop a dog barking, i'm sure Di will write about that, i would like to know in case the need ever arises with my littley.
There is a collie that lives 2 doors from me and each time someone puts something through the door the dog is barking and growling, the young man that delivers the free newspaper weekly has refused to deliver to this house.
I totally understand what you've said though Di and you're right I should look at it from the dogs point of view. We are giving mixed messages.
Back to the drawing board I guess.
Sorry grin, a very nice forum member rang me out the blue just as I went to reply further on, have to walk the dogs now before it gets dark, didn't want anyone to think I was being a drama queen and building up the tension!
