Hello, i'm pondy,
I have a 22month old Choccy Lab called Bridie, (whose sitting next to me as i write so i'll have to be careful or she'll know i'm writing about her). She's not our first Lab but our only current one at the moment!!!(the wife wants a yellow for company). We bought Bridie from a so called reputable breeder in kent but within a couple of days Bride was ill very ill, she was diagnosed with Parvo and for nearly six weeks she was touch and go wether she would survive. i contacted the breeder on many occasions but basically he didn't really give a stuff. He said she could have got it from a live parvo vaccine but as none of the other dogs in his kennels has it , it was just bad luck........that was the last we spoke to the time waster, i couldn't give up on her and am so glad we didn't.
Anyway after almost double her price later we got home a very small and poorly dog.
As she's matured she's turned into a cracking family pet, great on and off the lead and a loving friend. I'm not saying she hasn't got her faults, she will still have the recycling bin over now and again, and she can be picky as to what dogs she wants as friends or not. The only down side to bridie is her size, i believe because of the bad start she had it's stunted her growth a little, she about 4" shorter than our friends Lab who is slightly younger than Bridie. But Bridie has got the big Chunky body that her parents had, not fat, Muscular!!
We live next to a nature reserve so she's walked twice a day and has the run of the downstairs and garden the rest of it.
Is there anything we can put in her diet which could help her grow? she's already eating a complete dog food with herbs and garlic.
We would like as i said earlier to get a yellow to keep her company but i'm a little bit dubious about what breeders are good locally and who are not!!!, we've thought about re-homing but will probably just get a puppy from a breeder.
O.k that's enough from me for now i look forward to being able to get the most from this forum.
hi and welcome to the mad house...so sorry to hear about your furbabies hard start at least she has you and your wife now....im sure someone will be along soon who might have some advice to help ,...we have some great experts round here...we love pics round here so would love a look at your girl
Well done for not giving up on Bridie and nursing her back to health. I'm sure all her love for you has more than paid you back.
If you want to get another pup have a look in the lab breeding section on here and you will find some excellent breeders.
I'm sorry you were let down by your breeder, we were too. Charlie has had to have both his hips replaced at under 1 year old due to my naivity and not buying from a breeder who had her dogs healthchecked.
Well done for perservering through what must have been a very tough time when you first brought your furbaby home. Glad to hear Birdie is doing so well now - and remember, the best things come in small packages!
Not sure what you can do about increasing size now, as our vets told us that their bones harden at around 18 months, so it may be too late. Also I know bone density is very important, so might be as well to be thankful for the small bundle of love you have!
Hello and welcome
All our labs are different shapes and sizes so I wouldn't worry. Im sure the vets would have mention her size if it was an issue.
So glad for you that she is healthy now.
