I know there have recently been threads on moulting but this is the opposite

Charlie had both his hips replaced a few months ago and was shaved from his middle to half way down his tail and half way down his back legs.

His 1st op was done in early Sept and his fur was almost normal within 2 months. His 2nd was done early October and after 3 months his fur still isn't properly back.

His tail and legs are fine but over his right hip isn't. He is dark chocolate in colour and the fur that has grown back is light brown and quite downy. Is this his undercoat? I always thought that a dog's coat grew more in the winter to keep them warm but this doeasn't seem to be the case. In fact over the last month it hasn't grown or changed at all.

Do you think it will grow the same as the other side or is there a possibilty it will stay like this?

Thanks for any replies

When I think to how Mojo moults, it is mostly in the spring that she renews all of her coat, whereas in the autumn, she blows her undercoat and grows a new thicker one. So maybe once the spring arrives Charlie will have a full moult and grow back his top coat too. Wink

It will probably grow back the same in time if BJ's experience is anything to go by.

BJ had to have a brain scan and spinal tap a couple of years ago and that meant he had his head shaved from the top of his skull down the back of his neck, to just above his shoulders. He looked like he had a reverse mohican hair do.

The hair on his neck actually grew back at a different rate and different texture to that on top of his head and it did not completely grow back for a good 5 months. This was done in November.

I hope Charlie's coat will be better soon, after all that poor little chap has been through.

Best wishes

Fay

I know we're a few months behind you wendy, but boomer's hair on her hip is growning back light brown and frizzy too. It was almost blond to start with.

Was discussing it with OH earlier and we have come to the conclusion that it is her undercoat, and as it is winter there is alot more hair than usual for the new growth to catch up with.

I reckon by late spring / early summer you won't see the difference, and hopefully we'll be able to say the same by the end of the summer.

Poor charlie - maybe you'll need to buy him some 'just for men' to keep him going!

Thought this might be useful Wendy.

We went back to the specialist vets with Boomer on Friday. He was really pleased with how she was doing, but surprised her fur hadn't grown back quicker.

He said he thought it was to do with fur growing seasons, the next major one being July - meaning both Boomer and Charlie had their fur shaved after the last one. He said it would be less noticable in the Summer, then should catch back up in the Autumn.

He also suggested to us that we wait until after Boomer's fur grows back before getting her spayed in case any hormonal changes affect the regrowth.

I guess we're both stuck with slightly baldy-pups till then!

There is no doubt the fur has "Growing seasons" Anna was operated on just before the winter moult and her fur was visable within a week. Had she been operated on half way between moults it would have taken months. Don't worry, it will come back given time.

Regards, John

Jenni I'm so pleased that Boomer is doing so well. Such a relief eh?

Thank for the info on hair growth John and Jenni. It is slowly coming through but Charlie says if Danny laughs at him, then he'll have to wear his jogger bottoms so you can't see his bald bum!!!

I'm sure he'll be fine Smile Bons has just had surgery on her back a very large square to have a cyst removed. Here's hoping and I know it will come back normal in time. Keep a Smile on your face and tell him to keep his chin up!!
