Hi All
This is our first post in the forum.
My wife (Sandy) and I (Chris) have recently bought a chocolate Lab puppy. The little fella will be ready for collection 3rd week in Jan and as you can probably imagine were both very excited.
We have both owned dogs before but never as puppys and would welcome your hints, tips, do's and don'ts.
We are all like a big happy family on here, so any questions just post away and there will always be someone around to give you some great advice.
Look forward to seeing some piccies of your pup soon
Welcome Sandy and Chris, this is certainly the best place to find out anything that you need to know about the Lab world. If you have any problems just come on line and type away and hopefully we will soon receive the answers you need.
Bet you cant wait to get your little bundle of joy and we cant wait to see pics of the little fella.
Ann
____________ Kimmy you will always be our superstar, we love you
Hello and welcome to the forum, a wonderful and friendly place full of good advise... It is addictive, be warned... We love pics and can't wait to see your choc pup's ones.
Well, I am sure the experts will be writing soon, here is my contribution...
I guess you have all your necessities, ie bed, toys, food, collar and lead, drinking and eating bowls, etc... Make sure you take him out regularly for potty, ie, when he wakes up from sleeping, after eating, after playing, and pretty much very often for the first few weeks, praise him like mad when he does his business outside but don't say anything when caught doing it inside, just take him outside straight away and don't let him see you cleaning up his mess. Be regular with his feeding, always at the same time, it is good to get them into a routine right from the start.
Socialize, Socialize, Socialize...Make sure you find out where your puppy party is held, most probably at your vet, this not only build his confidence but also make him like going to the vet. My girl Kyra adores going to the vet thanks to the puppy parties. Enroll him asap on his training puppy classes to start as soon as he has had his last injections and he is clear to go out. I can't reccommend this enough, expose him to as many different dogs and people as you can in the last few weeks, thanks to that you will have a very well balanced and happy dog in the future.
Wow, sorry I am on the roll here... He he he....You might also want to follow the 5 minute rule for walking. As a young pup you should only walk him 5 mins per day per months of age, ie if he is 8 weeks, given that he has the all clear after his last vaccination, you can walk him 10 minutes, when he is 3 months 15mins, etc... This will help prevent any joints problems when older. Labs have history of hip dysplasia, and although a part comes from nature a lot also depends from nurture...
One more thought, if you can take an old T-Shirt with you when you go and pick him up, rub it on the littermates and his mum and then leave it with him at night, this will help with the separation from them and the change of enviroment. If you have got a crate for him you can put the
T-Shirt in there for him. At night if you can do shifts and take him out as many times as you can, if he cries don't give in or he will very quickly learn that cry or whines will mean you get to him pronto. All pups are different though, some whine and cry, other sleep through the night from day one, you will learn to get to know him and creat the right partnership to suit you both...
Sorry I got carried away, you probably know all this already...Enjoy your bundle of joy and I can't wait to see lots of pics of him! Labs are truly special dogs, wonderfully playfull and always happy and eager to please!
I bet you can't wait! and the next 3 weeks will seem to never pass by...He he he....
Well good luck and best wishes! I am so excited for you!

Hello all and thank you for the warm welcome
With 3 weeks to go before we collect out pup we're very excited. Have not decided on his name yet although Winston, Nelson, Harry and Stan are nearing the top of our list
We're yet too buy his things and would be interested to hear more about your views and opinions on what to get and what not. We'd be especially keen to hear more about crates and their benefits and usage!
