i feel the dog should be allowed to physcially mature should there not be a distincy behavioural sexual based problem resulting in the castration desire by the owner.
I always ask my puppy buyers, unless there is a distinct reason not to, to wait until between 12 and 15 months of age.
Allow the dog to reach physcial height and bone growth. However if there is a reason, from 6 months (shudder) onwards will be fine
hehe - we had Danny castrated at 6 months - basically as soon as we could...I couldn't see any reason to wait.
The only difference we have noticed is that he has never humped anything since, but he is still a giddy ant and the op certainly hasn't spolit his character
Max was your typical "hormone harry" from the word go
One sniff of a bitch and that was it, forget the rest of the day
I took advice and waited to see if he would calm down but alas he just got worse and started to get very territorial and generally a total nightmare to take out.
I had him done at 14 months and yes it has calmed him down a great deal. He's still a pain in the bum when he smells a bitch in season but at least now it doesnt last very long and as soon as I can get him focused on something else he's fine
Di, can I just ask......not trying to be pedantic here....If a sexual based problem rears it's ugly head (say marking or fighting over females)....will castration cure it completely???
The way I tend to look at it is, why wait until you have a problem, if you know you are going to have it done in the end.
The only dogs we've had in the family have all been snipped early, so I haven't really got anything to go by...The only other dog in the family is my sisters stud dog...but that's a whole different ball game, as you well know.
Well I was going to wait until he was 12 months old ( i still see him as a baby) but my dad was saying that I should get him done now, before he starts getting any ideas about being a real dog (if you see what i mean)
I will just have to get him done before we get puppy number 2.
Hi,
We waited till Cadbury was over a year to have him done as i was concerned that it affect his growth etc. I found that it had no affect on his personality at all.
That said my friend who has Cadbury's brother had her pup castrated at 6 months - he has grown to be very similar size and build to Cadbury and again has kept his personality! so I am not really sure if it really makes much difference .
