Im still undecided if i should have Ben castrated, his 11months now and his a good boy who loves everyone. The only problem i have is if a younger male dog starts on him Ben will turn around and flatten them!Older dogs he will just walk away from, and bitches he will play lovely with. Its the young unstarts he puts in there place-the owners dont always like this so im thinking maybe if i get him castrated he may start to just ignore them What do you all think,he loves to play and will play with anyone unless they start to jump at him,im sure he wouldnt hurt them but his so strong!
I just never had the need to get my last dog done-he never showed any interest in girls!Dont get me wrong im not against it,i just didnt want to put him through something if i didnt have to.
Totally agree with Jules, unless you were planning on using him for a stud dog then castration is the best thing all round. It'll be all over and done with in a couple of days, usually with males they bounce right back the very next day. There are so many more fors for castration than againsts.
I think after Xmas he will be snipped, the main thing thats stopped me before now is how much he hates going to the vets-his a rescue dog(dont want him to think im dumping him ).
I too agree with Jules, I personally think it is the most responsible thing to do if you're not a breeder...
The operation is so routine now that he should be absolutely fine - Danny came back from the vets exactly the same as when I left him there that morning - just as bouncy!!!!!
I think you would be doing the right thing for what its worth
Castration may make Ben ignore "upstarts" otoh it may not, when CJ was a pup plenty of dogs flattened him and gave him a good telling off for ignoring "Doggie Etiquette", sadly some owners don`t realise this is all it is and the pup is going to learn from it, owners used to apologise to me when it happened to CJ, I used to tell em he got what he asked for!!
That aside castration is the best thing (imo) if your not planning breeding, it means no unwanted pups, no testicular cancer, Ben will be fine after the op, quiet for a day or two maybe, then behaving as if nothings happened.
Remember tho it takes quite sometime for the testosterone to leave the dogs system and he may not quiet down for sometime if at all.
I know what you mean about feeling bad about having to leave Ben at the Vets for his op which is why you have held off doing it... Especially as you have rescued him and are worried that he will feel abandoned..... BUT he won't Jean ....He will look at you when you pick him up albiet a bit bleary eyed but will say " hey mum i'm so pleased to see you and don't feel bad i knew you hadn't deserted me AND there is nothing to forgive" ....Before you know it he will be your big beautiful bouncy Ben again....
And remember when the date is set..... We will all be here to send our love and healing vibes to Ben and big hugs to you as we will know as his Mum you will be worrying...
I agree with all of the advice here. If you are not planning on putting your dog out to stud then I think that castration helps ensure that he cannot be responsible for an accidental litter.
Charlie was castrated at 9 months of age, and the only problem was that he immediately tried to chew his stitches out. I have not regretted it at all, and it gives me some peace of mind that I have done all I can as a hopefully responsible dog owner.
If he hates going to the vets, is scared and worried, why don't you have a word with the vet before hand and ask if you can be with him until he's had his pre-med....That way he can be all woosy and relaxed when you leave him.
I know our vets will do this for nervous dogs, so I can't see why with a bit of planning your vet wouldn't too.
