Sarah, I'm on the wrong 'pute so don't have my database handy but I know for certain Basil is related to both mine (Blue through Carpenny Walpole and Coco through KMM!) An interesting mix of show and working dogs there.
It is a strange mix of field and show isn't it? I've edited to try and show but basically the show is all on the sire side and the field all on the dams.
Why might a breeder do this? Might she be trying to make the move over to showing? I think she was retaining a pup from the litter for that purpose?
What does that make basil as such? I think if i understand from some posts by JohnW he is neither show nor field as he participates in neither and doesnt not have a strong defined line in either. Have I understood that right?
It's hard to say at 8 months but he looks like a little hybrid of working and show! He has the lean frame and long legs of field and very deep barrell chest of a show dog, like his father. Of course he could just be lanky while growing.
He is very lazy and calm around the house but seems to have a bit of a working attitude when exercising.
We took him to a dog hash on saturday (i didnt know what one was -basically a run/jog/walk depending on which you fancy but you work as a pack heading down dead trails until the front runners find the right trail and lead the pack, dogs and owners, on) we intended to do only part of it as he's too young for so much exercise but basically Basil led the pack like a dog possessed getting quite frustrated at me and OH for not keeping at the front with him! It made me think that could be his working lineage as i've never seen a lab run like he did. He seemed to instinctively understand what to do.
Sorry for huge long post but your thoughts and knowledge is really appreciated

Ozzie shares bloodlines on both sides. On your dog's sire's side, from Rocheby Old Smokey back, also some of the Carpenny names are familiar, in different positions on his pedigree though. And on your dogs dam's side, all the Drakeshead lines.
