At the end of this month, we are getting a puppy (can't wait!). She is yellow with a brown nose. The dam – a working dog – is also yellow with a brown nose, and the Breeder explained that this is because she was bred from two chocolate dogs. The sire – a show dog – is black.

From the litter, the breeder will be taking two of the dogs for herself; one to work and one to show. She is not taking the one with the brown nose as she said she will not be able to show her. Someone commented to my husband that we should get a discount on the puppy because we will not be able to show her. I would never dream of asking for a discount. If I wasn't happy with the puppy or the price, I would find another breeder, and we do not intend to show her anyway – we just want a good, healthy family pet.

Although I feel I have done my homework on buying a puppy, I still worry that I am doing things right, and comments like this make me question things. I just wondered what your thoughts were on this comment as I am not quite sure why the person said it and wondered if they were just being ignorant or if I should be worried that we are not getting the best kind of puppy (she looks gorgeous to me)! I feel confident with this breeder in every sense, as I really feel she has ticked all the boxes as far as being responsible goes. I am probably just being overly cautious (which is never a bad thing!).

I hope you will forgive my lack of knowledge on all of the above, and appreciate that I just want to do what is best, and make sure I know exactly what I am doing! I look forward to your replies.

Hopefully one of our experienced breeders will respond when they log in to explain the colouring to you, I know it gets complicated with genetics and such like lol Wink

Oooh - what a question - not even going to begin to try and answer it, other than to say my understanding is that yellows can have Black or Brown noses - all down to genetics

Hopefully Diana / John / Kay will be able to give you some useful info - but in the meantime, some links for you

Hello all,

Just thought i'd add my 2 pennys worth Very Happy

If the dam is from working stock and the sire is from show stock, to be honest, you probably wouldn't do all that well if you wanted to show your pup.

Before i have to put my tin hat on Laughing , i'll try to explain.

Long, long ago, there was one type of Labrador - a dual-purpose one that could be shown and worked, but unfortunately (or fortunately) this has
now split into two types, working and show lines, and they are very different, there are loads of links that will show this.
Unfortunately, the only showing class which you are likely to progress in is a fun class, as the serious showing people will no doubt say that your pup is too leggy/lean.

I am honestly not trying to be horrible about this, go ahead and enjoy your pup, there are lots of things that you can do if showing is not for you, flyball, agility, trialling, tracking etc.

No advice, but Honey Bear is also from showing and working lines and is yellow with a brown nose, I must admit I'd never thought about it. I'll be looking at yellow labs to see their nose colour from now on, LOL Laughing XX

Lynsey, not sure if i'm right or not but I remember reading something that if a yellow lab had a brown nose was called a 'Dudley', if i'm wrong then maybe someone can correct me, but I agree with what the others have said that you might not be able to show her, but then afterall you want a family pet and thats what owning a lab is all about.

Generically speaking possibly yes - but on a broader note there are a lot of people on her who work their 'show' labs Very Happy - and from what I have seen from some litters recently, a lot more breeders crossing working bitches with show line fathers Very Happy

Carpenny Anchorman is from Working and show lines, and as a CH with a BOB at Crufts to his name, and I believe now working full time - it doesn't appear to have done him any harm Shocked

I found this article on here a few months ago. It is very good.
http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/yellow-pigment.html

I have one yellow with chocolate points (Feather). She is as beautiful as the rest who all have black. Some noses have faded to pink earlier than others.

Why is that link not underlined? I've checked the typing on the article which I have printed and placed in Feather's file. (My black-lab-loving brother tries to insult my Feather by referring to her as a Dudley!)

Aha, it is underlined on the post, but not when I typed it out.
