Yes, we now have a second dog. She is a 16 month old Cocker Spaniel by the name of Topsy, and she will now be living with us.
In fact, I have re-homed Topsy from my brother-in-law and his wife, who due to their divorce under very sad circumstances are no longer in a position to offer her a stable home (house being sold, both now living with different sets of parents or kipping on friends' floors etc.).
Topsy and Charlie already knew each other, and had at times spent several days in each other's company, with rarely any problems. So far things are going OK. Will post piccies as and when I get the chance later.
Topsy is a blue roan cocker and has been settling in pretty well. There have been very few altercations between her and Charlie. It probably helps that they already knew each other anyway.
I have introduced her to a crate for her own bed, and to stop her pinching Charlie's basket when I can't supervise, as that does tend to put his nose out of joint, and he was the already resident dog after all. She crate trained easily, and it means both dogs have their own dens. She seems fully house trained, and has so far made no noise at night - just starts yapping as soon as she hears one of us coming downstairs in the morning, which is fair enough as we would be letting the dogs out then anyway.
Well Done for giving little Topsy her forever home! Charlie and Topsy will sort themselves out and get used to the fact that things have changed! Just give it time.
Sorry to hear about your BIL and his wife, these are the exact circumstances how we got Shep!!!

Yes, it is a sad situation. Not planned that way, but just one of those things. Brother-in-Law's young daughter had been sad that they would have to be saying goodbye to Topsy, but as we then offered to have her that seems the ideal compromise. Whenever the little girl is brought to visit her cousins here at our house she will still be able to see the dog. We will also be visiting the in-laws several times a year and they will meet up there too.
I must say that Topsy seems remarkably well adjusted considering that she has had to be passed around a bit due to circumstance. The only thing I am having to watch so far is that she leaves Charlie alone when he is in his own basket, and that is why I have introduced Topsy to a crate. Wouldn't want a fight to break out when I had to pop out of the house. They are sorting themselves out remarkably quickly so far though.
