Out with Kippa this wonderful wet, windy, afternoon and came across the first of the dog unfriendly stliles. Confused
Kippa is not as sprightly as she used to be and OH is certainly not getting any younger, but... between them they helped each other over the stile Smile
In the distance we saw yet another Rolling Eyes As we got closer we realised that the stile was in the middle of the field, NO fence on either side of it.
Great we thought, but Kippa nooooooo. she looked at the stile, back at us, at the stile again until we shouted - 'go round there's nothing there 'Rolling Eyes
She must have been tired??

Is it my imagination or are there more dog unfriendly stiles around?

I've never seen a dog friendly stile..what do they look like? LOL
Luckily when we've approached a stile theres been a hole somewhere in the fence for Shep to get through. We found a perpose built gap in a stone wall once for sheep to pass through and that was usful...but most of the time its a hunt around close by to find a hole in the fence.
The worst occasion was when we came up against a stile and there was no hole big enough for Shep to get through. Hubby can lift Shep over (like we had done before) but this stile was high and awkward and there was just no way that I could safely support him to the ground on the other side. Anyway someone told us where the nearest bridge was and we had to divert.
It's a pain when you've mapped out your route then having to go back or divert. But sometimes you can find some pretty new places.

That's an unfriendly one, like the one we saw today but taller and with 2 steps.
Friendly ones have a gate thingy next to it so you can pull it up and the dog can go through. Not many around Mad

The ladder ones are the worst.....

When I go walking with my friend her GSD has wheels to support her back end and we have to scrutinise everywhere as we would come unstuck if we came across a stile Very Happy

Amber can climb over the ladder ones but not the one shown in the picture. Shep just can't manage any stile, we have to lift him! and he's not light thats for sure! Shocked

There are loads of them in where we live.

I remember once my dad was leading a rambling group and me and willow went along with him, 7 of the damn things later and willow has developed a distinct hatred for them, they were really high ones and it took two people , me one side to lift her up and another person to put her back down, it is a shame because there are so many places made inaccesible to us now.

The moors and large farming fields seem to be the worst for unfriendly stiles where we live.

Local borough/council kept footpaths and walkways seem to a lot friendlier.

I think it is also down to some of the farmers Wink

They have great stiles around the Forest of Dean - little wire flaps for the dogs. Not sure if they're like that though Very Happy
