End of week one with Bo - really impressed with how quickly he has adapted.

Today he didn't touch his lunch, was nevertheless sick afterwards and had only two mouthfuls of dinner. He's on Pedigree Puppy, alternating the complete chicken and rice meals, and the pouches, and has gobbled them down no probs until now. He also has tiny bits of cooked sausage as a treat when he does his 'busy' in the garden. He's slept most of the day, but has seemed ok when we've taken him out to the garden between naps. He's due to have one more feed about 9.

If he doesn't touch that, should i leave any food with him in the crate in case he perks up in night and is hungry? Should I switch to some boiled rice?

Thanks for any further advice...

Vicky

He's been very settled in his crate the past few nights - no crying and no mess... Should I go down if he cries tonight, given he's been poorly?

I probably wouldn't leave food in the crate but I'm not really sure. Sorry Bumping up so someone more experienced will see it.

I wouldnt leave any food in the crate either. I would try a couple of spoonfuls of boiled rice with a tiny bit of meat in tho, instead of his last meal. and hopefully he will be back to normal tomorrow.

I havent any advice but if it helps, Katie who is 9 months has had periods of being sick and leaving her food for no obvious reason. This was mostly in the early days though. However, she did leave her food tonight and we have offered her more but she is not interested. Sometimes they will decide when they are hungry so try not to worry too much. Another thing I have noticed is that Katie will be sick when she has been given treats or any significant change in food, so now stick to one and very few treats.

I have tried a couple of different foods and find that at the moment she is happy with Hills Science Diet (sorry dont mean to advertise).

Hope he feels better soon I am sure his tummy will settle but obviously the vet can advise if it continues. You will undoubtly get some very good advice from some well experienced lab owners on this site too.

Ok, I make it that he is now coming up for 9 weeks old.

It's not unusual for puppies to get upset tummys. The move, the changes in food, even changes in the water supply is enough. Add the that, all the strange and wonderful things a 9 week old puppy put is it's mouth and the occasional "Jippy Tummy" is to be expected.

Sleeping is probably the biggest single thing a puppy of that age does, so nothing unusual there.

Is he bright and lively when awake? if so, I would not be too worried at this time, I'd wait until the morning before panicing.

As to Rice. I guess, being well after 9pm, I'm a bit late with this but for my part, no, I would just give the usual food. The reason is that if he has not been sick there is no reason to suspect there is anything wrong. So feeding rice is just changing the diet and risking an upset tummy for no good reason. I don't like the idea of a puppy of that age not eating because there is limited reserves, but certainly there is no need to panic yet.

Hopefully he will be eating by the morning, then it will be time enough to look into possible reasons. If missing meals starts to become a regular thing then I would be looking at possibly reducing the size of the meals slightly.

Regards, John

Sorry, I missed the bit where he had been sick, But even they I would still be enclined to feed his normal food, maybe a smaller helping for tonight and see how things are in the morning.

Regards, John

Thanks all of you. Didn't see your e-mail until this morning John, so had given him a little rice - he had a few mouthfuls, but will bear in mind what you say next time. Yes, he was pretty lively in between snoozes last night, so that set my mind at rest. Didn't have a peep from him overnight, he ate all his breakfast, and has been more full of beans this morning than ever, so seems he's back on track.

Thanks for all the responses though, it's very reassuring to a new Lab mum!

Hi,

I've just caught up with this, so please forgive me if I'm repeating something that's already been said.

Is Bo very young? I think I glimpsed 9 weeks? Although it's a long time since Kips was a pup, I've never been a Pedigree dog food fan.

I fed her Readybrek & milk, & eggs beaten with milk for quite a while. She then went onto Eukanuba puppy. She's on James Wellbeloved now, but she is now 9.
Regards to him being sick, I certainly wouldn't leave him any food tonight.
Hope he is o.k

Keep us posted x

Hi, Sorry I don't know if I missed anything but how old is Bo and do you know why he is being sick? Is he very young? Willow was sick when she was young a lot. You seem to be doing the right thing, but I wouldn't leave food in the crate.

On another note, try feeding Burns rather than pedigree chum. If unsure I'm sure others will rate it on the forums.

Hello again,

Yes, he's 9 weeks. If I am to change his food, how should I do it - replacing one meal a day then building up? - I know I shouldn't just change over in one go, as it could upset him.

He was sick again once yesterday, but ate all his meals and was his normal bouncy self. We saw that he'd brought up some bird nuts that must have blown off the feeder in the garden during the gales. He also had some worming powder in his dinner on Fri, so maybe that too upset him.

Am off to the vets for his first injections today- I'll let her know he'all of the above, as I know she might want to wait until he's more settled to do his jabs.

Thanks again,

Vicky and Bo
