I take Sam on regular walks in a small nearby wood. So far all the people ive met have been nice friendly responsible owners, letting Sam sniff there dogs, stroking him, keeping there dog out the way if its snappy and apologising etc
Today i met a man in the woods with his two dogs one was possibly a golden retriever, the other was small about 2/3 the size of mine.. as we approached the man was shouting aggressivly at his dogs, so i thought they must be snappy or bark at other dogs.. but the little one really calmy walked upto mine and was very friendly.. the man apologise, i said its fine, Sam loves to meet other dogs.. the man then grabbed his dog by the scruff of the neck and threw him a little bit maybee a foot.. i thought hmm that seems a bit much he was only being friendly.. so we walked off... a minute later i hear the man shouting again and realised the little dog had wondered back to see my dog.. i tried to pull my dog away and encourage the dog back but no use Sam was on his back rolling around while the other one sat on him lol
Tthe man came back and this time he picked the dog up and just launched him into the air, he must have thrown him from chest height nearly 1.5-2 meters... i was a bit shocked this seemed quite cruel.. am i over reacting? was this harmless to the dog?
No you are not over reacting, what a horrid man, he need reporting to the rspca. that behavouir toward the poor dog is not exceptable. If i could get my hands on the horrid man..........
no ur not over reacting when dogs meet its quite natural they want to say hello usually they have a good sniff of each other its wot they do then either go there seperate way or start a game it sounds like thats what they were doing they both decided the other would make a good playmate!!!! if the owner didnt want his dog to say hello he should have it on lead but picking it up m throwing it is not acceptable in any way woy ahorrible man i feel so sorry for his dog some owners shouldnt have dogs when they treat them like that
No, you are not over-reacting. That is not acceptable behaviour towards the dog, and is potentially harmful. He doesn't sound like a very good owner on the face of things to me.
It worries me that so many dog owners know very little about how to understand their dog's behaviour.
The other day, on our walk in the forest, a man had this beautiful beagle on a lead who was dying to play with Willow. His tail was wagging and his tongue was hanging out! He was only young and the man said to me "I can't let him off (the lead) because he will just run off."
I don't know about everyone else but when Willow was young we worked a lot on training her to be obedient in recall and it took a while. Things have to wrong before they get better, surely!
I felt like telling the man with the beagle, 'well you should read up about how to train your dog properly!' but I bit my tongue and walked away, knowing that the poor pup will probably be poorly socialised. Shame.
I think people should take a test and meet certain criteria before being allowed to own a dog and they should do their research about dog training and behaviour first!!!
