The thing is you are not "safe" anywhere.

Years ago I was attacked on a train (in the rush hour) , last year a friend of mine was attacked in a carpark (in broad daylight), another friend was mugged in the middle of Leicester Square at lunchtime, my nephews (both in their late teens) were jumped on by a gang and given a good kickin' at 3 O'clock in the afternoon, on their way to the station and there are many cases of people attacked in their own homes. Rolling Eyes I'll be buggered if I'm going to let the Baddies stop me enjoying my dogs.......If we all thought about the consequences of living we would never get out of bed in the morning. Wink

I always walk my four alone, we stomp along the park, fields, river and orchards during the day and ive never felt really worried. Infact i worry more when we are on the streets and we have more trouble with idiots road walking. I would never walk them in those places at night though, we occasionally go out at dusk in summer but thats all.

If we go road walking at night i carry my rape alarm around my neck, i know in the heat of the moment its likely i wouldnt be able to press it but the trick is to make yourseld look as "dangerous" a target as possible.

I agree with Jules - if you worried about everything that could happen when you go outside we'd all be nervous wrecks! Life is for living - of course don't be reckless but don't hide under your duvet either. Wink Very Happy

I have always walked my dogs on my own as my husband is out all day & the dogs wouldn't get out otherwise.

Occasionally when I'm out in woods or deserted fields I have wondered what I would do if I was attacked but I tend to be a bit fatalistic & figure that it might happen but it's fairly unlikely. These days the South Downs can resemble Clapham Common on a Bank Holiday at the weekend so I'm not exactly on my own!! Laughing

Fortunately I don't have to walk the dogs after dark; neither do I have to walk around town centres at night which I think is more hazardous!

I totally agree that nowhere is 100% safe. Live life without taking silly risks all the time. You can't say you will never go out alone simply because something MIGHT happen. If we all did that then none of us would ever go anywhere, which could well mean that we could not own dogs. Confused

Helen.

Get yourself the loudest personal attack alarm you can find and keep it in your hand.

And don't underestimate both the deterrent effect of your dog and its response if it thinks you are truly in trouble.....even if it is 'only'a lab....

I frequently end up walking Baxter on my own in the dark. I live in a quiet country village, but we walk up on a big WW2 airfield, so as long as I have his brill flashing collar, he still gets a good offlead run even if I am late going out.

I took him to a different field the other night, and to be honest didn't feel at all happy there on my own, and he would absolutely not leave my side to go for a run. Normally he's half a field away (recall is getting good now!), but he bloomin' well knew I didn't like it. I love my boy!

I often walk Twigs on my own on Clapham common as I work there 2 days a week and quite often, especially now the weather is turning, we don't see many people - as opposed to the summer sea of sunbathers!! the other week days I have my sister in-law on Wimbledon common which is great and more often than not we see No-one except the odd ranger - which is great - and I am happy to do Wimbledon on my own.

In the dark evenings now I only do local street walking with Mobile - and it is really quite funny to see how many youngsters in hoodies dart across the road to avoid us! - Makes me chortle anyway!!
