Agree with the ball thing.. We did the same sort of thing with our GR Rocky and he now lives for fetching his frisbee, so long as his big red frisbee is there - nothing else in the world matters other than bringing it back to me so it can be thrown again!
My lab Yorkie is now 7mths, and after he decided to cover a woman on her way to work with all his muddy footprints a few weeks back, we keep him on the long lead so we can reel him in whenever neccessary - it seems to be working as he doesn't really ignore us when out now! I don't think I'll be trusting him completely off lead just yet though, as he's still VERY bouncy whenever he meets other dogs, no matter if they tell him off or not!
