Arrrgggghhhh I am having one of those mornings......OH and I come back from a few days away to find our dog has turned into a teenager at 6 months.
I took him into the woods this morning, on-lead for a while walking quite nicely to heel, sit him, take lead off and give him the release command - off he tears at 90mph up into the woods.......call him back - nothing - hide and call him back, 1 min later he comes. Carry on walking keep him in sight, he dives off to the side comes back with a torch that someone has dropped and is trying to get the end off where the batteries are! Distract him with a treat, retrieve torch...walk on doing some off-lead heel work - all going well.
Turn the corner and off he runs at full speed to a little jack russell on the lead, apologise retrieve my dog, walk on gently holding his collar until he calms down. Put him back on lead for some heel work and hopefully to bring his attention back to me.....sit him, off lead, release command off he goes at 90mph again, see's a deer - all excited, tears off round the corner - when I finally catch up (recall command not working at all) I find he has found 3 elderly walkers all of whom are not amused to find a 6 month muddy black lab trying to make friends with them, thankfully nice younger man running past likes George and makes friends so I can put the lead back on. Elderly walkers tell me off and say I should put some obedience in place!!!!!!!
Rest of walk through woods back home is on the lead, get back home....George finds a pair of ear protectors which he merrily runs around the garden with thinking it is a great game and nothing I can do or try and distract him with works.....eventually he decides that one of OH outdoor shoes is far more fun and takes off with that. OH is not in best mood today anyway so am desperately trying to bring George back under control before he spots what is going on.....
Result of this morning is I find George has decided to completely ignore all of his obedience training and do entirely his own thing, doesn't seem bothered if I am around or not, or even trying to please me...he is very much looking for mischief today and I am wondering where the wanting to please, little boy who loves his mum more than anything - aside from food of course - has disappeared to.
Just venting as OH not in understanding mood today and I have not had a good morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's hope this afternoons walk is a better one.
oohh Ruby got like this then we discovered her obsession for tennis balls - no she rarely goes further than to get the ball and back - may be obvious but have you tried that when on walks?
LOL I just re-read my post and laughed myself....thankfully this afternoon's walk went much better - although to be fair I only met one couple with 2 labs themselves and George was on his lead at that point. He was much more responsive to me, I kept running away and hiding behind trees, did alot more on-lead work and stayed much calmer myself.
A better end to the day I must admit.........
oops meant to add I haven't tried the tennis ball route, think I will from now on and hope they have more appeal than EVERYONE else and EVERY other dog!!
I did chuckle when i read George's antics............ Then looked at Sherpa and said........ " Sherps have you been teaching gorgeous George bad habits ....Youv'e only met him once so far..... ".... "hey mum" says Sherpa........." we labby's like to keep our mummy's on thier toes.!!!"
Elizabeth, please give lovley George a huge big kiss from me ..can't wait to see him again
Sounds like George has turned into Kevin!!, you`ve done the right by keeping on his lead more while he`s going through this stage in his life, work on al the stuff he already knows, let him know your still in charge and no matter what he does he isn`t going to get his own way
The ball thing that Vicky suggested is a good idea to, CJ is also call orientated, no one and nothing else matters when he has that
I agree with Vicky, when Charlie went through that phase when he was a pup we got his attention onto a ball - now he lives for chasing his ball, he would retrieve anything and everything thrown for him and the world and his wife could walk past and he wouldnt care - we are now working on getting Paddy as focused before he reaches his teenage months
