We are on the look out for a black show labrador to come and be part of our family next year but before we do I want to start going to shows near to me, can anyone tell me how to find out where they are?
we live near York and many years ago there was a dog club in York but no idea anymore or where to find out, tried the Kennel club but the info never arrived, so thought I would ask you guys! Or if there is someone who shows who lives near York who wouldn't mind meeting up for coffee once in a while I would like that too.
Hope someone can help, would love to go to mixed and group shows before we take the plunge so I can show OH what we are letting ourselves in for!
This covers the majority of shows out there, Open and Champ, Breed and otherwise
If you are looking for a black lab for the show ring and want a dog for next year - you need to start looking and talking to breeders, and need to be explicit in what you want.
I spoke to literally hundreds of breeders in my search for a pup, and waited around a year after narrowing my search down to 2 or 3, I wanted a black bitch, but because the timing suited me, actually ended up with a yellow girl, Clover, who is now 9 months old, so it can help to keep an open mind.
Obviously, if you go for a pup, good breeders will guide you, although there are no guaranteees, and the pup won't be able to start showing until the pup is at least 6 months old - so quite a waiting game all in all
I just said what a good idea. I went to one show then approached my breeder having studied their "form" and watched progress for a number of years. Sue did far more workt han I did but then I think she had more choice being in a country where she spoke the first language!!
I wanted a black bitch, had fully expected to have to wait then discovered one was available!! I got Bluebird when she was 12 weeks old and we have just entered our first show in January when she will be 7 months old.
I believe there are several excellent breeders in your vicinity. Ones I have had persoanl contact with are Zanys and Tintagel Winds (who are in France and now in the UK too).

PMSL @ Nicola - yeah, but look at the breeder you went to kicking butt over here atm - their dogs are fabulous
Oh you don't worry about 'those' Nicola... remind your husband he took you for 'better or worse' 'richer or poorer' 'dog shows in this country and abroad'.... and then buy him a membership of his golf club/xbox plus 10 games/book on 'what to do when the wife becomes obsessed with showing' etc.
Actually, you could borrow it off Alison's (Winsleywood) longsuffering show slave, Allan.... he's read it cover to cover and back again for sure!
My husband (number one) said to me that I was far too into the dog world and doing miles too much with showing/working/training etc etc and it wasn't fair on him. He was right. So right. Poor Man. How selfish of me. So I left him. Grin!
(Only HALF kidding - and there are no kids involved I hasten to add before you think 'cold bitch!'!)
