By sitting the puppy with his back close to a tree and passing the cord around the tree it can be used to gently restrain the pup in position until you either return to the pup or call him. With a little lateral thinking a check cord can be so useful. Of course, as Pippa has said, it is so important for the puppy to be confident before using the cord or panic is likely to set in.
