Eddie is now about 8 months and i have to admit we do (well i do) spoil him. We usually let him him come to bed with us, even though we crate our other dogs at night. Eddie has never really took to a crate ( again if i'm holding my hands up, most likely because i have spoilt him and gave in to easy).

Anyway over the last three nights he has started to wee on our bed at night, usually not long after i go to bed, and before the OH comes up.
I let him out before bedtime, so i don't know why he has started this bad habit. OH now says he will be sleeping downstairs in a crate along with the others who are happy to do so Sad

So why has he started doing this, is it a domain thing?

Hi denise, giving this a bump for you, and remembering from Dog Borstal repeat last night about that little dog that was aggressive towards the owner's husband - did you see it?

That was identified as a jealousy thing - maybe your Eddie is trying to put his mark on the bed as his (esp since he's doing it before OH comes to bed). They resolved it on the show by ensuring the dog was only rewarded for behaviour that didn't interfere with the couple's relationship (e.g., being quiet when they had a hug instead of barking etc). They also started crating the dog in the bedroom to show him his place was NOT on the bed. After a while he was happily sleeping on the floor, and was firmly at the bottom of the pecking order, which is really where he should be in relation to the two of you.

Maybe your boy is trying to challenge your OH for top dog spot?

Firstly you need to make sure he has no bladder infection. A urine sample to the vet I'm afraid.

If there is no problem there then I'm afraid I would banish him from the bed. It could well be the start of a sexual thing, territorial marking. Is he castrated by any chance? If this is a sexual thing then this could be the way to go.

Regards, John

He isnt castrated John, but we was only talking the other day of having him done, we dont really have a choice as he was a rescue puppy and we signed a contract to say when he was old enough we would get him done. What is the best age, is it better to let him mature a bit more, he still seems so young.

I would have a word with your vet Denise. Firstly, is it is a bladder/urine infection then you have all the time in the world. Normally I would go for 18 months to 2 years but if it is a territorial marking thing then I would break my rule and get it done early, before it becomes a habit.

Question, What's he like when out on a walk. Does he happily walk along or does he want to "Scent mark" when out, and if scent marking, how often on the average walk?

Regards, John

He has just learned to **** his leg and seems to do it as soon as he is out the door then try's to stop at every other tree and lamp post, he also went through a stage of barking at other dogs while out walking, but i put him in a halti which has helped that problem no end.

So it sounds like he is doing quite a bit of scent marking then. This could point to the reason and is something which Castration could help. There can be no guarantee that it would help and even if it did it would not be an immediate change. It takes a time (Up to 6 months) for the hormones to die down. Saying that, sexual problems are something which Castration is best at helping.

As a thought for you, you could ask your vet to prescribe a course of Tardak. This is sometimes known as "The chemical castration" and because it suppresses the hormones is used to determine if castration is likely to help or not. Whether this is a justifiable expense or not, if you have already decided to castrate anyway though is debatable.

Regards, John

We have to get him castrated anyway although personally i would have like to have waited till he grows up a bit more but IRR recommends 6 months so he is already a few months late. I wll have a word with my vet tomorrow and see what he says, we have a really good relationship so im sure he will advice which course of action to take.
Thanks for all your help John
