Had one to one training yesterday, it was absolutely brilliant
The problem i have with Bailey is when out walking on lead is other dogs, if there is another dog, he will whine, try to yank me over to them or bark at them because he wants to go and say hallo!
Inside i kept wondering is he becoming aggressive
So i booked a one to one training session with my trainer from classes. Should have done this a long time ago!!
This is what she said, he is not aggressive he's excited when he sees another dog. When he is walking on lead with no distractions he is brilliant.
We then went walking and she showed me how to read him with his ears, if they start to go up, i turn round and go the other way and keep doing that. If he gets very hyped up then to smack a tin lid on my leg or heel (not the dog)
Then she got her dog out and we started walking on the opposite side of the road until we were walking on the same side together. She explained pack law and dogs becoming an extension of my pack.
She asked me to do what i would normally do, which is roll the lead around my hand, she said she could see him change, i'm transmitting down the lead i'm nervous, which i am. so to hold the lead in both hands at my stomach.
She also gave me some very helpful tips for when puppy comes, and she said he will love it because he is very friendly but to remember who's top dog. me!
When bailey barks it is when there has been eye contact it doesn't matter what size of dog small, med, large.
Just wondered whether any you guys had experience this or had any advice.
Yes Corbie does similar. He has also been pinned down by off-lead dogs in the past so is wary of some who approach and will bark. He does whine when he sees other dogs, so I will try your trainer's tip of going in the opposite direction... any on-coming person will probably think I'm a looney
Thats brilliant Sharon! My Millie is doing exactly the same thing and its all excitement. So as soon as I spot a dog I watch her. As soon as she starts to bark I quickly turn but the moment she is quiet we turn back round and keep walking. I only need to turn about twice by the time we have reached the dog and by then she is calm and quiet!
By the way, I don't see myself as top dog - I am just her owner who is guiding her through life in a civilised manner. I am not a wolf and neither is she lol
Another tip which your trainer may have covered - NEVER wrap a lead round your hand, it is so so dangerous for you. people have lost fingers from doing so when holding strong dogs. Dislocations are frequent visitors to A&E!
Can you tell me what your trainer said banging a tin lid would teach the dog when she gets excited? Is she a very submissive dog that when you do this she immediately crouches or cringes away and so breaks the behaviour? If not what purpose does it serve, just purely distraction from the oncoming 'traffic'?
Karen...i did feel a bit of a looney but if it works that's all i want
Sonia...it's nice to know i'm not the only one, i loved what you said about top dog that is so right
Di...i don't think bailey is a very submissive dog,(now you got me wondering) When i first banged the lid he did jump out of his skin sideways, now he looks at me as if to say what are you doing or what am i suppose to be doing. I think the idea is it breaks the behaviour
Ok thank you.... if you don't fancy banging a tin lid, you can use a small squeeky toy or better still really nice treats which you always use a trigger word before giving. So personally I use 'ohhhh' which starts as 'ohhh what HAVE I got here then...?' when they are really young and rustle a crisp packet or tin foil to get them slowly out to distract, always just as I reveal my delights, to get attention and then moves on to shortening and shortening till just a slight 'ohhh...' starting can whip a dogs head round so fast it nearly breaks its neck in our house.... it does take a bit of time but i'm not banging a tin lid would be my bag in public - grin.... well not for long anyway and the temptation to bang it over certain individuals heads here would be just TOO great somedays.... chucking biscuits at them from time to time just doesn't have the same 'call the RSPCA!'-ness about it

Training my first dog has taught me more in patience than anything else, including a whole Brownie Pack!
I think I'm going to try the walking away thing and the treats as well, as Baxter can still get very pull-y towards another dog. We now get to within about 10ft of another dog before he 'goes' which is a HUGE improvement, but I can still spot the ears go up and the panther-stalking that goes with it!
I can see I'm going to have to start accosting other dog walkers over the fields to practice!
It is a good point Diana raises about wrapping the lead around your hands.
A few weeks ago the trainer at Charlie's weekly dog class ticked us all off about it (in a tactful way) and issued similar warnings - broken fingers, snapped or sprained wrists etc. if your dog decides to yank or lunge.
I do try to think my way out of it now, but still regularly catch myself, as old habits die hard.
Helen.

My trainer thinks the biggest thing with me is my confidence because she said bailey is very responsive and focused on me and it's travelling down the lead, because of what i'm thinking when we see another dog...oh heck here we go.
If he greets another dog it's sniff sniff and i call him at of we go. trouble is he's got to learn that not all dogs what another dog charging over to them or worse he could get attacked for it.
Do you find if eye contact is made it is worse?
He doesn't do it at training though don't understand that though
