Doesn´t matter you didnt win the first prize you always take home the best dog!
Its such a shame to use crates, soft or otherwise. Labs should be happy benched normally, and the public do love to wander round and see the dogs, not an anonomous shape in a covered crate. I'm not sure why people would use crates if they are secure their dogs have good temperament.... they haven't for 40 years BUT I suppose thats progress maybe....
If someones dog, in the past, had an iffy temperament, they would leave it at home, sell it on or at the most, put a cage front up on the bench...its a revelation to me why so many crate on benches in these non see through things.
Not really the case now Di - many people use the light weight cages. We do and have done for some time as we were benched near dogs that kept flying in on their way past. I put mine in crates so that they are safe and I can leave them without worrying. If you have dogs nearby flying it is easy for people to blame the wrong dogs.
Personal preference really but much more common now and we have moved away from the "only dogs with temperament problems are caged". There are now many who havent got problems who are also caged.
Grin, I do realise lots of people do now use these soft crates on the benches. How do you secure them to the bench? With benching chains? I am too traditionalist for my own good maybe. I don't see the dogs as safe in them really as they encourage protection of area by the nature of being enclosed and familiar from 'home'. Maybe can even encourage protective grumblings and snapping as they can't make out when or what is going by clearly.
I am really just being a devils advocate. I wouldn't use them because I feel the dogs are safe on the bench and a well aimed yell or whack usually stops that incoming pirahna type lunging as I walk down the dog lines... I just always felt it was a shame that A) we feel the need to protect our Labradors from other labradors, maybe that needs bringing back up in breed notes and B) that people can't see the dogs when they walk the bench lines.
BUT I am not arguing its horses for courses for each individual
Well I am fortunate enough not to actually secure them to the bench at all as mine dont fly out to cause them to move!!
Devils Advocate Di - you do surprise me!! Huge Grin!!!
You may be right but I suppose its down to personal choice. Its a difficult one but personally I prefer the fact the the public cant touch my dogs if I am not there. If something happens at the benches and you are not there its difficult to deal with and in this day and age sorry to say but everyone has to watch their own back!(Grin - have you seen my arrow!!)
Also I have known people to blame other peoples dogs to cover up for their own.
Of course there will be for and against any choice but I think it is a valid point about encouraging protection. A concern I have had myself but on balance I still prefer to use the cages.
