Rachel - I seem to remember on one of John's other posts that he said we talk too much to our dogs A bit like men (and teenagers) they switch off if we go on and on
Sounds quite logical to me and certainly is true of my husband and son - but not too sure where that puts men/teenagers/dogs as a group

once he sees another dog or person or bird
he skips ahead a few steps and hes off
have tried all the suggestions here and at training class
he returns on command providing there isnt something more interesting out there
especially likes the dead pigeons the local ferrets leave scattered about near me
am keeping the faith but its getting hard somedays
hes a year old now

It's a little bit like the old story, If I'd wanted to go there I would not have started from here Mindwipe.
I know that sounds facetious, but training starts at day one. I'm working from the off at what I want and simply not allowing anything else to creep in which I’m later going to have to correct. It often said that to get something wrong once is no problem, to get it wrong twice is serious but to get it wrong three times and it becomes a "Learned Procedure". The problem then is, not only have you got to teach what you want but your dog also has to unlearn the "Wrong Procedure".
Follow the guidelines I set out earlier BUT FOLLOW TWO WITHOUT FAIL! 1/ Teach a release command, and use it if you think you are about to loose control. So 2/ you never call him without him coming.
You are not going to retrain him in five minutes, but it will work if you stick at it.
Regards, John
