just wanted to add my experiances in the difference of training my 2 ive read many things about owning a choccie ie they are nuts difficult to train ect ect i have a black lab that came from a loving home had been well cared for just couldnt give him the time he needed (tho later i found out it was really coz they wanted another spaniel) but in any case hed been brought up in a family home with proper vet care n had been loved
then on the other hand i have a choccie thats been passed from pillar to post through different homes been left alone all day at some stage we think hes been beaten with a broom (hes terrified of them) never seen a vet n was badly underweight n didnt even own a lead when he came to us
neither of them them had had any official training tho they could both sit on command were house broken (mylos house breaking prob being more out of fear than proper training as the day we got him he did a poo by the back dooor n when it was discoverd he cowered in the hall!!) we got them both at roughly the same age (mambo 14mnths n mylo 12mnths) yet i have found they are completely different to train even their attitude towards training mambo takes it as if i have to n its more of a battle of wills even when he understands wot hes meant to do but once u can get him to do it hes usually steady every time but off lead he always trys to take advantage of him being in control whereas mylo is always so eager to please but is never sure hes getting it right its almost like hes doing it over n over just to get reasurance that it is wot u want hes still very much a bouncy pup n even when he knows wot u want he looses concentration so u never really know if he'll get it right next time his recall is excellent as he always wants to be with u (wich is a pain when trying to do a stay!!) on the whole i find it easier to train mylo
sorry for the long post i just wondered of those of u that have 2 labs were they as different as my 2 to train even when brought up in the same enviroment as i know their history prob hs alot to do with it
again sorry for the ramble just curious ......

Thats really interesting!!!

I don't have 2 labs but can already see the difference in the ways i train my 2, Alfie is very laid back but will do what i say but in a slow mode, if i say "come" he will, but he won't race to me, just walk slowly Laughing and is VERY food orientated. Billy is quite the opposite though, not sure if it'll change when he grows up a bit but atm if i say "come" he'll race to me at 100mph Laughing he'll do what i ask (although he only knows "sit", "down", "leave" and "paw" ) and be happy for his reward to be a cuddle and a pat on the head Laughing He also follows me everywhere and would come into the toilet with me if he could, where as Alfie is happy to lay down and watch me walking about the kitchen etc but Billy has to be right by my feet Rolling Eyes that could be his age though Confused

I agree Monya - all 3 of mine have different training needs - and all have different background and stories too.

Doobs is so receptive to training - he loves training and is so easy to train too. He always has a smile on his face during down stays and looks a real happy bunny. When he came to us he was a typical big bouncy 14 month Lab. Now, one year on, he is loyal, happy and mostly a good lad.

Gracie, as you know, came to us at 9 weeks so apart from her horrible start in life with her brother, came to us with a clean slate really. She is bright as a button and very keen to learn (do anything for a treat she will!) As she gets older we can see more and more collie in her so I assume thats wehere her brains come from.

Mille is your stereotypical choccie. She has had such a traumatic past so who knows if this is the reason she is the way she is. She is nuts! And her concentration span is that of a fly. But she is very eager to learn when she is in the right frame of mind but can be very stubborn too. After 3 months she still claims to not know what down means Rolling Eyes but she is getting there slowly. She is the daftest one out of the 3!

But I am so glad they are all different as they keep my mind ticking over and I never get bored training them!!

i found with mylo n all the s**t hed been through it was almost as if he was pretending he didnt know wot to do coz he was so scared of getting it wrong even this week at training we did the silver test he would not stay didnt even manage 30secs yet he managed it fine for the bronze Shocked Shocked n i was using my stern training voice like u do Laughing but he still got up, as i walked towards him he fell straight to the floor over on his back tail tucked right to his belly he just looked teriffied he completely fell apart i was almost in tears of course i was disapointed he didnt do it but i was very shocked by his reaction i would never lay a finger on him for anything n i didnt do anything i dont usually do at training he was just so scared ive not seen him that bad for a few months now (he did it regular to start with) i feel awful about it but really surprised too

Every dog is different and every dog needs to be handled differently.

Talking about Anna and Amy, both want to please, neither dog can take heavy handling, but there the similarity ends. Their reaction to stress is totally different. Anna as a puppy could handle it. Faced with something difficult she would try and try and try. Amy on the other hand would try, but if she thought she could not do it she would switch off and start sniffing the grass. She has needed a lot more babying along, but is a lot more naturally gifted than Anna who has always had to get it right by sheer hard work.

Chalk and cheese!

Regards, John

Monya, if you try using some capital letters and full stops - it will make your posts easier to read. Imagine you are reading your message out loud and think where you would pause, or stop. That's a good hint as to where to put the punctuation.
