Hi all Sorry for the long post
We went for our usual walk tonight across the fields at the end of the road and we met up with Roxy, a Bull Mastiff with her mum and dad who we see over there most days. Pheebs was behaving normally and ran up to Roxy's dad (who's bald) for a fuss like she normally does. Nothing unusual there. The pups had a play and a swim together as normal, with Roxy telling Pheebs off for being too rough (as usual ) Then a Westie called Frank came to play and would NOT stop trying to hump her (no chance mate - you are small and she likes big boys lol) she wasn't having any of it and kept running off to play with Roxy. Then another dog (a collie) came over and tried to hump her too! Yesterday she had 3 dogs try to hump her as well!!!
Then we all started walking back across the field away from the water when we see a man in the distance (about half a mile away) on his own. Pheebs stood dead still and started grumbling under her breath. We continued to carry on walking homeward bound and ignoring her behaviour - Mark was throwing her ball for her to keep her attention off this dude in the distance. When we got a bit closer to him, he started whistling as if he was calling a dog to him but there was no dog in sight, Pheebs ran about 50 metres in front of us towards this guy who was about 100 metres away from Mark and I, and Pheebs started proper belly barking at him, in a really aggressive manner while looking back at Mark and I as if to check that we were still there The dude (also bald) stood still and it looked like he was calling her to him but she was having none of it and I called her back which she did do, but would not stop barking I swiftly put her back on the lead.
This dude looked like he was upto no good but I couldn't be sure of his intention. He came within about 20 metres of us and didn't say anything at all.
Phoebe has NEVER barked while out walking and NEVER at another person before she rarely barks anyway at home. In fact she has barked once since the weekend and that was tonight!
Thanks if you have read this far but now for the questions/advice......
I know she is about the right age for a season and we had to go the vets last week and he said she looks like she may come into season very soon (swollen vulva which I'd already noticed and "full" abdomen on palpation) there has been no blood and no discharge so I am presuming she isn't in season So do these dogs know something I don't??? Apart from the past couple of days, one of her other friends has tried to mount her too last week - his mum said he had never attempted to hump anything in his life. Does a season sound imminent?
Then secondly, this man????? Not convinced it was because he was bald cos Roxy's dad is bald too. So what was it all about??? She barked the whole time he was in sight and once he was out of sight she was sniffing the air and the ground and behaving really jumpy and twitched.....did she pick up on something that we didn't? Mark and I just behaved normally and carried on walking so I would be suprised if she picked up on any anxiety.
Could all this weird behaviour be linked to a pending season? She has never been aggressive or volatile before
Help!
Thanks in advance and well done for getting this far!
She maybe is coming into season Lucy I think I read somewhere males can detect a season upto a month before it happens and this was true with Majic as the entire spaniel across the road was going wild and they asked us if she was in season and we said no.
As for the man believe it if you like I feel they have a sixth sense and will alert to bad vibes not experienced it but heard various stroies which are very believable.
If she is whining she may also be very near to starting her season and is wanting cuddles and attention she may have some mild tummy cramping too with the changes going on down there.
That doesnt sound like a very pleasant experience, sounds like Pheebs had this guy sussed. It does sound like he was trying to attract her or another dog to him.
Glad to hear her recall was good and she came back straight away.
As for the dogs humping, A couple of dogs tried humping Fudge about a week or so before she came into season. Keep tissue testing her, try to do it as soon as she wakes from a sleep.
Sorry I'm not much help
Just giving support n (((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))))

My friend's Bernese always knew my bitches were coming into season a good month before. I would start "Toilet Tissue Testing" very regularly from now on. It certainly sounds like she is very near.

Dogs are far better at picking up on body language than us, so maybe there was something??? Then again, seasons can affect some bitches. She could just be feeling a bit spooky.
Lucy I am deeply offended I am extremely sensible................................................................. ...................................................................... ...................................................................... ...................................................................... ...................................................................... ......................................................................
