I have a 14 month old choc lab who has become very aggressive towards other dogs, i am looking for a dog trainer in the salford/manchester area for one to one tuition.
I have been looking but can't seem to get any joy can anyone help me or give me advise on how to stop this?????
My choccie became aggressive towards some, but not all, dogs at a similar age too. She is normally fine off the lead and after careful observation of one "attack", the owner of the other dog noted that there was a lot of noise, snapping of teeth but no actual biting. She is far worse on lead than off though. She hates nearly all female dogs, regardless of size and some males too! She will play nicely with 3 dogs at my training club - a Bernese mountain dog, a Landseer and a shih tzu, all male and all owned by the same family! Odd or what?
I haven't managed to solve my problem and as I live in France can't recommend a trainer either but good luck and keep us posted!
Can your vet recommend one? Is it on lead aggression, or does it make no difference? I ask because my Charlie can be very defensive towards other dogs in situations where both must be on leads, but if they are off-lead and can approach each other at their own paces then he is much better, and it tends to defuse the situation.
Otherwise I would suggest trying the APDT website (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) to see it they have anyone qualified in your area.
Many dogs do not like to meet other dogs when they are on lead and what can often be nervousness/excited behaviour can sometimes come across as aggressive.
Has something happend to make him this way? Was he attacked?
How old is he? Is he neutered?
Sorry for all the questions, but its unusual for dogs to just suddenly become aggressive[/img]
Like Sarah said, are you sure its aggressiveness? Mille barks and pulls towards other dogs which to others may look nasty - but it really isn't. She is just excited and wants to say hello! Just a very noisy hello!
I am pretty sure that he is being aggressive, however when Chester does start to bark and growl i am reluctant to approch the other dog incase a fight does break out.
Chester got into a fight with 2 bull dogs about 10/12weeks ago which resulted in me going to hospital with dog bites in my leg, so i am a little hesitant to run the risk of approching the other dog when he starts to growl and bark at the site of another dog.
Do you think if i was to get him castrated this would help??
If he was attacked then you cant blame him for being wary of other dogs which is probably the reason behind his aggression.
I would suggest you find a decent trainer in your area and socialise him with other friendly dogs.....I assume that because of his aggression you are not letting him off lead? thats not ideal as a lead will in the long run make him worse.
Whats his recall like? Could you reliably let him off and call him back in the presence of another dog? One of my dogs is not very dog friendly so we keep her occupied when passing other dogs, either by doing some training with her or by playing ball with her.....she is always off lead though it would drive her mad if she were on lead all the time.
Getting him castrated may help, but then again it may not.
Do you know any dogs that you could socialise him with? You really need to try and nip this in the bud asap
