The way I see it, is that the time to sniff is when they are offlead in the field/park/wood and not onlead.

I agreed.

When Leo is on the lead, hes on the lead and thats that. No sniffing or faffing about. He gets to sniff and fanny about to his hearts content when he's off the lead, so i expect him to be very well-behaved when he's on lead.
He is allowed to stop for a wee or a poop when on the lead, but i allow this because he NEVER poops or even wee's in my yard! lol So its expected he'll poop or wee when walking on the lead at some point.

But apart from that i expect his manners to be good and he's corrected if there not. Which is rare anyway. I taught him from a puppy though, that leash walking was just that, and he soon learnt quickly that faffing about or stretching over to sniff an area of grass was unacceptable whilst on the lead.

i do let them sniff and play a little as we don't always have time for off leash walk, so it is only fair, but if i am in a hurry i say 'not now' and they both seem good at stopping it and coming with me. As for the Pooing thing on walks, my bt doesn't as he only uses one place in the garden and would rather hold it until were home, but sasha is still learning and although fairly good at 'emptying' before we go she does have accidents but then she is only 4 1/2 mths old. BLESS.

I do a bit of both, if he's doing walking to heel I don't let him, but I'll then say on you go and he can sniff then.

He'd sniff all the time if I let him Laughing

I don't let him pee up every lamp post Rolling Eyes Laughing

lmao @ john

brandy cant sniff as she has teh canny collar and she is on a short lead so really she doesnt get the chance until she is off lead then its nose to the ground and off she goes..lol..

rosze on the other hand complete kettle of fish..lol.. she is on normal collar and lead she does tug a little but i either stop walk her backwards or tell her to heel.... but i admit i do allow her to have a sniff infact sometime i have no choice she is a dead weight when she is determined that this certain spot needs her nose for a minute..lol..
but most of the time she will sniff then i will say *walk on* or just tug her lead a lil and say *come on* and we carry on....
