Awww Don't beat yourself up over it...Some dogs do just bark more than others...it doesn't mean he's unhappy. It more than likely means he's found a good way to get your attention .
Have you tried the time out method.....Barking = taken out of the room and left on your own until you stop?...It could work, he is still very young .
I hope you are right
Yep, tried time out - it makes him bark more I am beginning to wonder if this is the real reason that he was put up for rescue to be honest with you......if I had small children the barking would drive me doubly insane
I think its a food/treat thing so we are also going to reward him with toys rather than food.....maybe he is starving hungry all the time
Maybe when paddy barks ignore him and fuss charlie and izzy and then when he is quiet fuss him may work as he will see the others getting the fuss and the only reason hes not getting it is cos he is making a noise
Tried that Makes him more persistant, and then he turns to beat poor Charlie up
When he barks in class do you give him the toy, rawhide etc to shut him up??? If so I think that's why he's barking....The barking gets him something...and when he gets bored with that he barks again and he gets something else. He has to learn that being a bit bored is just fine, which is something I'm teaching Oyster at the moment .
I'm training her to "settle". Being as she is a GDBA pup, I take her out to all sorts of odd places (Tescos, Coffe shops etc) and I have to get her to lay down and be quiet. She then gets a treat and it told "good Settle".
I started this off at home...everytime she was tired and laid down for a nap I told her "Settle, good Settle" and gave her a long slow stroke. Now a few weeks later, when I'm paying for my groceries, drinking my coffee etc, I lay her down and tell her to Settle.....Sometimes it happens straight away, sometimes it might take 2 or 3 times of me being very persistant , but in the end she gives up and settles, she knows she isn't going to win .
I know she gets bored, she is only 14 weeks old and she wants to explore the world, but I have to make it plain that she can only have fun at my say so. Wriggling, barking, squirming about on the end of the lead.....all get you nothing....laying there quietly watching the world go by, gets you treats and strokes .
I think you have hit the nail on the head Jules, yes whenever he barks in class he is 'rewarded' with a treat or toy purely to shut him up
I will do the 'Settle' thing and see what happens.
He is 100% food motivated, I know all labs are but he is far worse than Charlie ever was/is. So just now, we came back in from the garden when all the guys normally get a food treat - he raced into the kitchen as normal and started barking for the treat, Charlie and Izzie got theirs - I waited for a moment until he was quiet and instead of food he got to play ball instead.....not as exciting as food but still a reward for not barking.....
Echo and now Ugo, both went through a phase of barking for attention, particularly at training class, and it was just that..attention.
I fold my arms and turn away from them...no eye contact , no touching, no commands...nothing!!!
If they continue then I just get up and lead them out of the room without saying a word. I wait outside until they quieten down and then walk back in without saying a word or even acknowledging that they exist. If they bark again then I repeat it all again.
Be warned..it gets worse before it gets better as they will try every trick in the book to get the attention that they were getting before but you have to persevere.
Make sure that when they do settle they get rerwarded in a very calm manner.
Ugo sometimes shouts at me when we are training if he gets over excited or frustrated. Again I just cross my arms and look away until he quietens down. Any interaction only happens when he's calm.
Good luck, it really is just a phase and it wont become a habit if you can nip it in the bud now.
Becs and the Gang
Thanks for that reply Becs....very informative, we are going to try that next week..... I'll let you know!
We have just got back from swimming, it was Paddy's 1st time.....whilst he loved the swimming he still managed to do it in the water When he was on the side having a rest, soon as he started to bark we put him in the water which stopped him right away - but soon as he had swum a couple of seconds it started again.......
However, during the lesson I had to nip to the car to get some money.....apparently he didnt bark once when I was gone........... attention seeking from his Mummy me thinks
