Okay, so that's Herbie's Five Generation Pedigree! I would love to hear what you think of his lineage out of pure interest. We will not be breeding from him (neutered). He is our much loved pet.

Some of his "relatives" have CH or SH CH or FT CH or (IMP) and (JW) next to their names. How high a level in terms of showing do these dogs get awarded CH or SH CH etc? What does (IMP) and (JW) stand for?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mish

" Okay, so that's Herbie's Five Generation Pedigree! I would love to hear what you think of his lineage out of pure interest. We will not be breeding from him (neutered). He is our much loved pet. "

Outstanding quite frankly Wink He is line bred on the Cornlands line very nicely and thoughtfully indeed and I am sure is a very nice looking biddable little dog. I know Percy (his dad) well and he is an exceptionally nice 'person' with some major show wins to his credit and is a very good stud dog.

Alongside 'Dusty' and 'Spinner' just a very typical, typey Cornlands pedigree. Behind there we have the usual suspects in a show bred pedigree - generally good dogs, most which will be health scored and tested right up to the 5th generation.

" Some of his "relatives" have CH or SH CH or FT CH or (IMP) and (JW) next to their names. "

CH = Champion - means a dog who has made up to a Show Ring Champion BUT then has also passed a working certificate called the 'Show Gundog Working Certificate' meaning they show the basics of instinct and talent for working to a novice, but useful level.

SH CH = Show Champion. Meaning the above, but no Working Certificate has been passed. (Rather rudely sometimes called 'Sham Champion' by some who feel that our workijng breed, to have the word Champion attached to his name SHOULD of at least passed some kind of working certificate - but thats another story, another debate...)

FT CH - A dog who has made up in the working arena as a Field Trial Champion.

IMP - Imported dog from Abroad

JW - Junior Warrant. A show ring title meaning he has won a certain number of show classes at both Open and Championship level between the ages of 6 months and 18 months of age.

To make up to a showring champions (SH CH or CH) takes a great deal of dedication, wise breeding decisions, wise show entering and beating around 650 - 1000 dogs of your own dogs sex to win its title.

A dog show at championship level (the only place you can earn anything towards making a dog into a show champion) has different classes scheduled for labradors. They seperate dogs and bitches so they only compete against their own sex. There are usually around 10 classes for each sex to enter. Most are restricted by age or the amount the dog has won in the past. Each class usually has between 10 and 30 dogs in it. If you win your class you go forward to what is called 'Best of Sex'. This means all the class winners compete against one another to find the best dog and the then the best bitch of the day. The best dog and the best bitch are each awarded one 'CC' which is a Challenge Certificate - sometimes called 'Ticket'.

You need to do this all three times to make your dog up. So three CC's must be won under THREE DIFFERENT JUDGES (so you cannot find just one who likes your dog and chase him round the country!). If you do the maths, even if the dog won three CC's in three shows, he will generally have beaten:

10 x (say) 20 in a class.... 200 dogs each day - so 600 minimum.

Of course that is ONLY if you happened to be as lucky as a lottery winner or have such a superbly outstanding dog that three judges in a row prefered him to ALL the other dogs there Wink

Hope that helps, ask anything you like.

Di

Many thanks indeed for your comments on Herbie's Pedigree. He is a very handsome dog - not just in our opinion, but other "dog" people, particularly Labrador owners have said so. At a recent "fun" dog show, he won a 1st for "Most Handsome Male"! The judge was Kennel Club affiliated. Anyway, Herbie is our pet and we love him.

This came up in the dog press rather a long time ago. The proposal was that all dogs in all groups should prove themselves in their respective "Job" before being eligible to be called a "Champion". The Chow Chow, being originally bred as food, some wag said, "Does that mean the judge would have to eat the Chow Chow?" Embarassed

Regards, John
